Manitoba Provincial Road 588
Provincial Road 588 (PR 588) is a provincial road in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Route description Provincial Road 588 links PR 279 to PR 275. It is paved for two miles from PR 275 to Big Woody, a small hamlet by the Woody River. The route also crosses Lambert's Hill, a steep hill just south of the Porcupine Mountains. PR 588 serves as a collector road for the surrounding rural areas and is also used to access Whitefish Lake. History PR 588 has changed significantly from its original route. A southern leg of this route used to extend from PR 275, four miles west of the junction with the still-existing northern leg, to PTH 83 near Benito. Furthermore, PR 588 used to go around Lambert's hill because it was so steep, but the grade has since been cut down. Also, it used to extend further to reach PR 279 which has also changed its alignment. Overall, the original length was 46 kilometres. Part of the southern leg is now signed as PR 487. Woody River
Woody River is a river in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The river's source is in the Porcupine Hills and Porcupine Provincial Forest of eastern Saskatchewan. From there it flows south through boreal forest and then east through Boreal Plains in the Parkland Region of Manitoba en route to Swan Lake. The river parallels the Swan River for much of its route as it travels through Swan River Valley between Duck Mountain and Porcupine Hills of the Manitoba Escarpment. Bowsman is the only notable community along the course of Woody River. Several highways cross it, including Saskatchewan's Highway 980, Manitoba's Roads 588, 587, 366, 268, and Manitoba's Highway 10. Provincial Trunk Highway 83 (PTH 83) is a major north-south highway that runs in the far western region of the Canadian province of Manitoba. It travels from the North Dakota border south of Melita, north through Virden, Birtle, Russell, and Roblin to its northern terminus with PTH 10 in the town of Swan River. Benito, Manitoba
Benito is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Swan Valley West, Manitoba, Canada. Prior to 1 January 2015, Benito was designated as a village. The community is situated in the Swan River Valley, southwest of Swan River, northwest of Winnipeg, and east of the Saskatchewan border. To the south is Duck Mountain Provincial Park and Forest, to the north is Thunder Hill and further north of Swan River is Porcupine Mountain Provincial Park. Benito has a large farming sector; its economic base is agriculture and logging. History People from Eastern Canada, England, and Europe first settled Benito around the beginning of the 20th century. Rural Municipality Of Swan River
The Rural Municipality of Swan River is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on May 1, 1901. It ceased on January 1, 2015 as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the Village of Benito to form the Municipality of Swan Valley West. The former RM is located in the Parkland Region of the province, adjacent to the Province of Saskatchewan, and surrounds the Town of Swan River. It had a population of 2,784 in the 2006 census.
