Manfred Reichel
Manfred Reichel (1896–1984) was a Swiss micropaleontology, micropaleontologist best known for his work on the morphology of foraminiferans, especially Alveolinidae, alveolinids. He taught as a professor at the University of Basel for almost forty years, where he became the school's first professor of paleontology in 1940. Lukas Hottinger studied under him during this time. Trained in zoology, Reichel also had a keen interest in the flight mechanics of birds, pterosaurs and bats, about which he published several papers. Reichel was also an accomplished artist, and his heavily detailed style lent itself well to illustrating complex foraminiferal structures. His pen and ink drawings of pterosaurs and the early bird ''Archaeopteryx'', rendered in lifelike poses, remain some of his most well-known work today. Micropaleontology (American spelling; spelled micropalaeontology in European usage) is the branch of paleontology (palaeontology) that studies microfossils, or fossils that require the use of a microscope to see the organism, its morphology and its characteristic details. Foraminifera (; Latin for "hole bearers"; informally called "forams") are single-celled organisms, members of a phylum or class of amoeboid protists characterized by streaming granular ectoplasm for catching food and other uses; and commonly an external shell (called a "test") of diverse forms and materials. Alveolinidae
Alveolinidae is a family of spheroidal to fusiform milioline foraminifera with multiple apertures and complex interiors in which chambers are subdivided into chamberlets and subfloors interconnected by passageways. As with all Miliolina, the test wall in alveolinids is porcellaneous and imperforate. In living individuals the pseudopodia emerge through the multiple apertures that line the apertural or leading face of the test. Alveolinids first appeared near the beginning of the Late Cretaceous, about 100 million years ago, some 150 million years after the superficially similar fusulinids became extinct at the end of the Permian. Irregular coiling is found in the first volutions in the microspheric forms of most genera, indicating a close relationship with the Miliolidae. Lukas Hottinger
Lukas Hottinger (25 February 1933, Düsseldorf – 4 September 2011, Basel) was a paleontologist, biologist and geologist. Hottinger collaborated with the Natural History Museum of Basel (Switzerland). Hottinger was one of the major experts on present-day and fossil larger foraminifera. In 1997 he obtained the Cushman Award from the Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research (Journal of Foraminiferal Research, vol. 28/1, 1–2) for his lifetime contributions to foraminiferal research. Professor Hottinger completed his PhD thesis on Paleocene and Eocene Alveolina in 1959 under the direction of Professor Manfred Reichel. His thesis on Paleogene ''Alveolina'' included genus and species definitions and changes through time, the concept of phylogenetic lineages, and their use in zonal biochronology.
