Mandal (surname)
Mandal ( sa, मण्डल, maṇḍala) also spelled Mondal, is a surname or title which is prevalent in India, Nepal and Bangladesh. The word "mandal" has various meanings depending upon the context, such as circle, orb, disc, ring, sphere, globe, orbit, province, assemblage or zone. A mandal is an administrative circle under a district or revenue division, similar to a tehsil, in many parts of India. Originally this honorary title was given to the Administrator of provincial government. 'Mukhiya' or headman of a village was also conferred with this title. Sometimes this designation meant the person who as a representative of the Zamindar used to distribute land and also collect the revenue. Mandal
A tehsil (, also known as tahsil, taluka, or taluk) is a local unit of administrative division in some countries of South Asia. It is a subdistrict of the area within a district including the designated populated place that serves as its administrative centre, with possible additional towns, and usually a number of villages. The terms in India have replaced earlier terms, such as '' pargana'' (''pergunnah'') and ''thana''. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, a newer unit called mandal (circle) has come to replace the system of tehsils. It is generally smaller than a tehsil, and is meant for facilitating local self-government in the panchayat system. Abdul Majid Mandal () (9 July 1948 - 22 January 2021) was an Awami League politician who was member of parliament from Sirajganj-5 and Founder of Mondol Group. Early life Mandal was born on 9 July 1948. Career In November 2013, Mandal was nominated by Bangladesh Awami League to contest the 10th parliamentary elections from Sirajganj. The then incumbent Member of Parliament, Abdul Latif Biswas, lost the nomination to Mandal and this led many of Biswas's supporters in Sirajganj to resign from the Awami League in protest. Mandal became the president of Enayetpur thana unit of the Awami League despite not having any affiliation with the party before 2014. He was elected to Parliament on 5 January 2014 from Sirajganj-5, representing Belkuchi Upazila and Chauhali Upazila.
