Manchester Airport is an international airport in Ringway, Manchester, Ringway, Manchester, England, south-west of Manchester city centre. In 2022, it was the List of busiest airports in the United Kingdom, third busiest airport in the United Kingdom in terms of passengers (the busiest outside of London) and the List of the busiest airports in Europe, 19th busiest airport in Europe in 2023, with 28.1 million passengers served. The airport comprises three passenger Airport terminal, terminals and a cargo terminal. It covers an area of and has flights to 199 destinations, placing the airport thirteenth globally for total destinations served. Officially opened on 25 June 1938, it was initially known as Ringway Airport, a name still in local use. In World War II, as RAF Ringway, it was a base for the Royal Air Force. Manchester Airport Holdings Limited, trading as MAG (originally Manchester Airports Group) is a holding company which is owned by the ten metropolitan borough councils of Greater Manchester, in North West England, and Australian investment fund IFM Investors. Founded in 2001 MAG is the largest UK-owned airport operator, following the purchase of BAA by Ferrovial in 2006. MAG owns three British airports Manchester Airport, East Midlands Airport, and Stansted Airport. In the 2017/18 financial year, 58.9 million passengers used MAG airports. Of the ten metropolitan boroughs of Greater Manchester, Manchester City Council holds the largest stake, at 35.5%. The remaining nine councils hold a total of 29%. IFM Investors own a 35.5% stake in MAG. The Group has its registered office at Manchester Town Hall.
