Rojava–Islamist Conflict
The Rojava–Islamist conflict, a major theater in the Syrian civil war, started after fighting erupted between the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and Islamist rebel factions in the city of Ras al-Ayn. Kurdish forces launched a campaign in an attempt to take control of the Islamist-controlled areas in the governorate of al-Hasakah and some parts of Raqqa and Aleppo governorates after al-Qaeda in Syria used those areas to attack the YPG. The Kurdish groups and their allies' goal was also to capture Kurdish areas from the Arab Islamist rebels and strengthen the autonomy of the region of Rojava. The Syrian Democratic Forces would go on to take substantial territory from Islamist groups, in particular the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, provoking Turkish involvement in the Syrian Civil War. Washington Kurdish Institute is an educational and research organization focused on Kurds. It was established in Washington DC in September 1996 by Dr. Najmaldin Karim, Its objectives are raising awareness of Kurdish issues, promoting human rights in Kurdish areas and supporting development of civil society among Kurds. Self-Defense Forces ( ku, Hêzên Xweparastinê, abbreviated as HXP; ar, قوات الحماية الذاتية, translit=Quwwāt al-ḥimāyati aḏ-ḏātiyyati, syc, ܓܘܫܡܐ ܕܣܘܝܥܐ ܘܣܘܬܪܐ ܝܬܝܐ, translit=Gushmo d'Suyo'o w'Sutoro Yothoyo) is a multi-ethnic territorial defense militia and the only conscripted armed force in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. As a self-defense force, manpower for the HXP is recruited locally. Name and translation The official name of the HXP in Kurdish is Hêzên Xweparastinê. Asayish (Syria)
The Internal Security Forces; ar, قوى الامن الداخلي, Quwā al-ʾAmn ad-Dāḵilī., also known as the Asayish; ar, الْأَسَايِش, al-ʾAsāyiš; syr, ܐܣܐܝܝܫ, Kurdish for Security. in the Jazira, Euphrates, and Afrin Regions, is the police force of the autonomous regions of Rojava. United Freedom Forces
The United Freedom Forces ( tr, Birleşik Özgürlük Güçleri, or BÖG) is a joint expatriate militia of several revolutionary socialist organizations from Turkey, most notably the Revolutionary Communard Party (DKP), active in the Rojava conflict of the Syrian Civil War. Syrian Democratic Forces Military Councils
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has many military councils for local security and defense, each being accountable to the Rojava#Administrative divisions, civil council of the area they operate in. In 2016, the Syrian Democratic Forces established four military councils (three west of the Euphrates) in order to facilitate and conduct military operations; the Manbij Military Council, the al-Bab Military Council, the Jarabulus Military Council, and the Deir ez-Zor Military Council. In 2017, the Idlib Military Council was founded in an attempt to gain influence in Idlib Governorate, much of which is controlled by Turkey, Turkish-backed Syrian Opposition, opposition groups. People's Protection Units
The People's Defense Units (YPG), (YPG) ; ar, وحدات حماية الشعب, Waḥdāt Ḥimāyat aš-Šaʽb) also called People's Protection Units, is a mainly-Kurdish militia in Syria and the primary component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
