Managua () is a department in Nicaragua. It covers an area of 3,465 km2 and has a population of 1,559,774 (2021 estimate), making it the country's most populated department. The capital is the city of Managua, which is also the capital of Nicaragua. The department has two coastlines, on the Pacific Ocean and on Lake Managua, but does not border Lake Nicaragua. Tipitapa
Tipitapa is a city and Municipalities of Nicaragua, municipality in the Managua (department), Managua Departments of Nicaragua, department of western Nicaragua. The area is located between Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua. History Tipitapa began as a settlement of local tribes. The first settlers were the Chorotegas, who populated central Nicaragua and especially the location between two lakes. Over time, the Chorotegas were divided into two rival gangs, the Dirianes and Nagrandanos. The kingdom of Dirianes was the jurisdiction to which it belonged. Pre-Tipitapa had its own social, economic and administrative policy. The largest populations were Managua, Xalteva, Diriomo, Niquinohomo, and Mateare Nindirí. There are two versions of the origin of the name of Tipitapa. Ticuantepe
Ticuantepe is a town and a municipality in the Managua department of Nicaragua with an estimated population of 38,520. Etymology Ticuantepe comes from the Nahuatl language of the first inhabitants of Nicaragua. ''Ticuane'', which means fierce or tiger, and ''tepeh'', which means hill, are combined to make Ticuantepe (''"Hill of the Fierce"''). Overview Ticuantepe has the largest underground aquifer in the nation, and is the largest supplier of pineapples to all of Nicaragua. Ticuantepe has an estimated population of 37,545, 44.7% of which live in urban zones and 55.3% in rural zones. The town has a nice "pueblo" feel to it. It is one of the safer areas of Nicaragua and is located just 20 minutes from downtown Managua. Mateare is a town and a municipality in the Managua department of Nicaragua. The municipality covers an area of 297 km2 and has an estimated population of 62,027. History Mateare, founded in 1898, is as old as the first cities founded by the Spanish in the late 19th century. In 1955 the city of Mateare suffered earthquakes that measured up to 6.0 on the Richter magnitude scale over a period of 14 days. The earthquake on Saturday April 26 that measured 6.0 caused severe damages to nearby houses. Lake Nicaragua
Lake Nicaragua or Cocibolca or Granada ( es, Lago de Nicaragua, , or ) is a freshwater lake in Nicaragua. Of tectonic origin and with an area of , it is the largest lake in Central America, the 19th largest lake in the world (by area) and the tenth largest in the Americas, slightly smaller than Lake Titicaca. With an elevation of above sea level, the lake reaches a depth of . It is intermittently joined by the Tipitapa River to Lake Managua. The lake drains to the Caribbean Sea via the San Juan River, historically making the lakeside city of Granada an Atlantic port, although Granada (as well as the entire lake) is closer to the Pacific Ocean geographically. The Pacific is near enough to be seen from the mountains of Ometepe (an island in the lake). The lake has a history of Caribbean pirates who assaulted Granada on three occasions.
