Mamre, Western Cape
Mamre is a small rural town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is situated on the northernmost border of the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality. It is situated approximately north of central Cape Town, and 5–6 km to the neighbouring industrial town of Atlantis. History Mamre was established as a village and mission station in 1808 by Moravian missionaries. It was at first known as ''Groene Kloof'' (Green Gorge) after the Dutch East India Company post established there in 1701 and abandoned in 1791. It was subsequently renamed after the biblical Mamre (Gen. 13:18), a name said to mean "fattiness". Denis Goldberg
Denis Theodore Goldberg (11 April 1933 – 29 April 2020) was a South African social campaigner, who was active in the struggle against apartheid. He was accused No. 3 in the Rivonia Trial, alongside the better-known Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu, where he was also the youngest of the defendants. He was imprisoned for 22 years, along with other key members of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. After his release in 1985 he continued to campaign against apartheid from his base in London with his family, until the apartheid system was fully abolished with the 1994 election. He returned to South Africa in 2002 and founded the non-profit Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust in 2015. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2019, and died in Cape Town on 29 April 2020. Mamre
Mamre (; he, מַמְרֵא), full Hebrew name ''Elonei Mamre'' ("Oaks/Terebinths of Mamre"), refers to an ancient religious site originally focused on a single holy tree, growing "since time immemorial" at Hebron in Canaan.Niesiolowski-Spano (2016). It is known from the biblical story of Abraham and the three visitors . The tree under which he had pitched his tent is known as the oak or terebinth of Mamre. Atlantis is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa and is north of the Cape Town. As of 2011, it has 674910 residents. Unemployment, lack of housing and crime are major challenges in the area. History of Atlantis The suburb of Atlantis was established during the 1970s by the Apartheid government as an industrial centre and a community for the coloured population of Cape Town under the Group Areas Act. In order to attract industry and residents to Atlantis the government introduced various incentives to attract manufacturing firms via a system of relocation tax credit.
