Mambo Birdland
''Mambo Birdland'' is a live album by the American musician Tito Puente. It was released in 1999. The album won a Grammy Award, in the "Best Traditional Tropical Latin Performance" category; it was Puente's fifth Grammy. Interviewed after the nominations were announced, Puente expressed particular appreciation as the album coincided with the Latin music resurgence of the late 1990s. ''Mambo Birdland'' peaked at No. 14 on ''Billboards Tropical Albums chart. Production ''Mambo Birdland'' was recorded at Birdland. Ray Vega played trumpet on the album. Puente, whose previous album was also a live recording, enjoyed live albums as they allowed him to expand and improvise on songs he had played for decades. Ernest Anthony Puente Jr. (April 20, 1923 – June 1, 2000), commonly known as Tito Puente, was an American musician, songwriter, bandleader, and record producer of Puerto Rican descent. He is best known for dance-oriented mambo and Latin jazz compositions from his 50-year career. His most famous song is "Oye Como Va". Puente and his music have appeared in films including ''The Mambo Kings'' and Fernando Trueba's ''Calle 54''. RMM Records, also known as RMM Records & Video Corp, was an independent Latin music record label established in 1987 and based in New York City. The label was most active during the late 1980s and early 1990s and produced primarily salsa, Latin jazz, and merengue music. At its peak, RMM Records employed 55 staff members and had distribution deals in 42 cities around the world, occupying 9,000 square feet in two floors at its Soho headquarters. Birdland (New York Jazz Club)
Birdland is a jazz club started in New York City on December 15, 1949. The original Birdland, which was located at 1678 Broadway, just north of West 52nd Street in Manhattan, was closed in 1965 due to increased rents, but it re-opened for one night in 1979. A revival began in 1986 with the opening of the second nightclub by the same name that is now located in Manhattan's Theater District, not far from the original nightclub's location. The current location is in the same building as the previous headquarters of ''The New York Observer''.
