However, the Labour Party was awarded an additional four seats to ensure they had a majority in Parliament.Nohlen & Stöver, p1310 Results Malta Labour Party took 31 seats in the election. Eddie Fenech Adami
Edoardo "Eddie" Fenech Adami, (born 7 February 1934) is a Maltese politician and Nationalist politician who served as the prime minister of Malta from 1987 until 1996, and again from 1998 until 2004. Subsequently, he was the seventh president of Malta from 2004 to 2009. He led his party to win four general elections, in 1987, 1992, 1998 and 2003, as well as the majority of votes in 1981. Staunchly pro-European, Fenech Adami was fundamental for Malta's accession to the European Union. Originally a lawyer, Fenech Adami was co-opted Member of Parliament (MP) in 1969. Lino Spiteri
Lino Spiteri (23 September 1938 – 14 November 2014) was a Maltese writer and politician. He served as Finance Minister from 1981 to 1983, and again from 1996 to 1997. Michael Frendo (born 29 July 1955) is a former Maltese politician who currently is a lawyer and consultant. Previously he served in the government of Malta in various functions including as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2008 and Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta from 2010 to 2013. Michael Refalo
Michael Refalo (25 February 1936 – 3 February 2015) was a Maltese politician and diplomat. He was a member of the Nationalist Party and sat in the House of Representatives between 1971 and 2003 and served terms first as parliamentary secretary and later as minister for tourism. Refalo was High Commissioner of Malta to the United Kingdom between 2005 and October 2008. He was also the editor of the ''Il-Mument'' newspaper from 1972 to 1980. Joe Borg
Joseph Borg (born 19 March 1952) is a Maltese politician and diplomat. Prior to taking up the post of Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs and led Malta's EU-accession negotiations. Career He graduated Doctor of Laws in Malta in 1975 and Master of Laws in Wales in 1988. Since 1979, Borg held various academic posts at the University of Malta, mainly focusing on company law, industrial law and European law. Tonio Borg (born 12 May 1957) is a conservative Maltese politician who served as the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy replacing John Dalli as member of the College of the European Commission in the second Barroso Commission. Political views Borg's political views have been described as Christian Democratic inspired by Catholic social teaching. He had proposed to entrench into the Maltese Constitution the sections of the law banning abortion (already a criminal offence in Malta). In Parliament, he voted against the introduction of a divorce law, despite it being upheld in a consultative referendum. Joe Debono Grech (born 17 September 1939) was a Maltese politician. He was a Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives of Malta. Political life Joseph Debono Grech started off in the Labour Party in 1959 both as a Secretary and also as a president of several branches of the party. In 1959 he was one of the founders of the ‘Brigata Laburista’. In 1967 he was appointed secretary of the Labour Youths and the representative in the bureau of I.U.S.Y. for the same committee. John Dalli (born 5 October 1948) is a Maltese former politician who served as Cabinet Minister in various Maltese governments between 1987 and 2010. He was European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy between 2010 and 2012.
