Maltese Political Union
The Maltese Political Union ( it, Unione Politica Maltese, mt, Unjoni Politika Maltija) was a political party in Malta. History The party was established in 1920 by a merger of the Malta Political Association and the Patriotic Committee.Vincent E McHale (1983) ''Political parties of Europe'', Greenwood Press, p634 It emerged as the largest party in Parliament as a result of the 1921 elections, and its leader Joseph Howard became the country's first Prime Minister. Two of the most popular politicians within the party were Enrico Dandria and Ignazio Panzavecchia, both clerics representing the party in Parliament. The 1924 elections saw the party reduced to 10 seats, and it had to form a coalition with the Democratic Nationalist Party to stay in power. In 1926 the two parties merged to form the Nationalist Party. Joseph Howard (Prime Minister)
Joseph Howard, OBE (1862 – 20 May 1925) was Prime Minister of Malta from 1921 to 1923. Biography Howard was born in Valletta in 1862. He studied at the Lyceum and abroad, also serving at the French Military academy. Upon return to Malta, he had a career in business in the tobacco industry, up to being appointed director of Cousis Cigarettes. From 1914 to 1925 he served as consul of Japan in Malta and President of the Chamber of Commerce. He also chaired the ''Società dell'Arte, Manifattura e Commercio'' and ''La Società Filarmonica La Valette''. In 1912 Malta's ''Comitato Patriottico'' appointed him as member of the Council of Government. He chaired the Government emigration committee, and in 1919 headed the delegation which discussed the employment of Maltese emigrants with the French authorities. Francesco Buhagiar
Francesco Buhagiar (7 September 1876 – 27 June 1934) was the second Prime Minister of Malta (1923–1924). He was elected from the Maltese Political Union. Biography Son of Michele Buhagiar and Filomena Mifsud, Francesco Buhagiar was born in Qrendi on the 7 September 1876,. He graduated in Law from the Royal University of Malta in 1901 and started a career as a lawyer in civil and commercial law. After twenty years practicing law, with Malta's self-rule Buhagiar was elected to the Legislative Assembly at the 1921 election on the list of Ignazio Panzavecchia's Unione Politica Maltese (UPM). From October 1922 he served as Minister of Justice, and one year later was appointed to replace Joseph Howard as prime minister. He led a minority government throughout 1924, on the run-up and follow-up to the June 1924 election, in which the UPM only got 10 seats. Nationalist Party (Malta)
The Nationalist Party ( mt, Partit Nazzjonalista, PN) is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Malta, along with the Labour Party. It is a Christian-democratic, and conservative political party, and it has been also described as centrist or centre-right on the political spectrum. It is supportive of Malta's membership in the European Union. It is currently in opposition to the Labour Party. Since independence in 1964, the Nationalist Party has won six out of the thirteen general elections, in 1966, 1987, 1992, 1998 and 2003. In 2008 it won with a paper-thin majority of around 1500 votes.
