Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2024
Malta is set to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö, Sweden, with "Loop" performed by Sarah Bonnici. The Maltese entry for the 2024 contest was selected through the national final ''Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2024'', organised by the Maltese broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services (PBS). Background Prior to the 2024 contest, Malta has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest thirty-five times since its first entry in . Malta briefly competed in the Eurovision Song Contest in the 1970s before withdrawing for sixteen years. The country has competed in every contest since their return. Sarah Bonnici
Sarah Bonnici (; born 30 May 1998) is a Maltese singer. She is set to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with the song " Loop". Early and personal life Bonnici was born on the island of Gozo. She is the daughter of Marcel Bonnici, billionaire CEO of Mercury Towers and Ħamrun Spartans. She has a master's degree in accounting. Career Bonnici was mentored by Miriam Christine from a young age. In 2009, she competed in '' Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest'', the national selection for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2009, with "The Mambo Song", finishing in third place. Television Malta ( mt, Televixin Malta; TVM) is a terrestrial television network in Malta operated by the national broadcaster, Public Broadcasting Services. Alongside the main TVM network, PBS operates a sister channel TVMNews+ (formerly TVM 2). History TVM was launched on 29 September 1962 as the first television service in Malta, although television broadcasts from neighbouring Sicily in far-southern Italy could be received in Malta from as early as 1957. Gerard James Borg
Gerard James Borg is a Maltese songwriter, author, and concept creator. He is well known for writing multiple songs that competed in the Eurovision Song Contest. Borg has written six of the Maltese entries for the annual Eurovision Song Contest with composer Philip Vella. Their song "7th Wonder" sung by Ira Losco gave Malta 2nd place in the contest. This was the first time Malta reached 2nd place and it is the country's best result in the contest so far, alongside the 2nd place earned by Chiara with the song "Angel" in 2005. Borg and Vella also penned the song "Reaching Higher" as the official theme for the 2003 Games of the Small States of Europe which were held in Malta that year. Firelight (band)
Firelight is a pop/folk-band founded in 2013 by vocalist Richard Edwards Micallef in Malta. Michelle Mifsud (vocals and piano), Wayne Williams (vocals, keys and guitar) and Daniel (guitars) are all Richard's siblings. The band is completed by Tony Polidano (bass) and Leslie Decesare (drums). Firelight's style is a mix of pop, rock, country and folk. Richard plays the Appalachian dulcimer, an American traditional instrument related to the European zither. Firelight represented Malta in the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Denmark with their song "Coming Home", placing 23rd out of 26 with 32 points, receiving 12 points from the jury selections from Armenia and the UK.. Malta participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with the song "This Is the Night" written by Johan Jämtberg, Kurt Calleja and Mikael Gunnerås. The song was performed by Kurt Calleja. The Maltese entry for the 2012 contest in Baku, Azerbaijan was selected through the national final Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2012, organised by the Maltese broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services (PBS). Matthew "Matt" Mercieca (born 19 July 1990), known professionally as Muxu, is a Maltese singer and songwriter. Having multiple number one singles, and winning local awards, he is one of Malta's leading R&B artists. Career Mercieca started his career, as a song writer co writing with Maltese producer Jay Omaro. Malta participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2016 as the host country. The Maltese entrant for the 2016 contest in Valletta was selected through a national final, organised by the Maltese broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) on 16 July 2016, while their song was selected internally. Each of the twenty participants performed covers or non-Eurovision candidate songs during the national final.
