Malta is a European Parliament constituency for elections in the European Union covering the member state of Malta. It is currently represented by six Members of the European Parliament. The electoral system used is single transferable vote. Members of the European Parliament Elections 2004 The 2004 European election was the sixth election to the European Parliament. As Malta had only joined the European Union earlier that month, it was the first European election held in that state. European Parliament Constituency
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are elected by the population of the member states of the European Union (EU). The European Electoral Act 2002 allows member states the choice to allocate electoral subdivisions or constituencies (, , , ) for the European Parliament elections in several different ways. Most EU countries operate a single national constituency which elects MEPs for the whole country. Belgium and Ireland are each subdivided into constituencies, with electoral results calculated separately in each constituency. Germany, Italy and Poland are each subdivided into electoral districts, with the number of representatives determined at the national level after each election in proportion to the votes cast in each district. Roberta Metsola (; née Tedesco Triccas; born 18 January 1979) is a Maltese politician serving as President of the European Parliament since January 2022. Metsola was first elected to as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2013, and became the First Vice-President of the European Parliament in November 2020. 2004 European Parliament Election
The 2004 European Parliament election was held between 10 and 13 June 2004 in the 25 member states of the European Union, using varying election days according to local custom. The European Parliamental parties could not be voted for, but elected national parties aggregated in European Parliamental parties after the elections. Votes were counted as the polls closed, but results were not announced until 13 and 14 June so results from one country would not influence voters in another where polls were still open; however, the Netherlands, voting on Thursday 10, announced nearly complete provisional results as soon as they were counted, on the evening of its election day, a move heavily criticized by the European Commission. 342 million people were eligible to vote, the second-largest democratic electorate in the world after India. Cyrus Engerer
Cyrus Engerer is a Maltese Member of European Parliament representing the Labour Party. A gay rights activist, he was the leading spokesperson for the Yes campaign at the 2011 Maltese divorce referendum. In 2021 he was tasked with negotiating the European Parliaments historic resolution on the declaration of the European Union as an LGBTQ Freedom zone, in reaction to the establishment of so called "LGBT-Free zones" in Poland. Engerer later went on to write the European Parliaments resolution which condemned the laws in Hungary which effectively banned "LGBT propaganda" in the vicinity of schools. Alex Agius Saliba (born 31 January 1988) is a Maltese politician, Member of the European Parliament since 2019 for the Labour Party. Biography Born Alex Saliba, he studied at Tarxien primary school and at St. Augustine's College. At 17 years, he joined the Labour students' organisation Pulse, and later the Labour Party youth branch, ''Forum Żgħażagħ Laburisti'', both of which he presided till 2017. Saliba worked as a journalist for One Productions (the Labour party media house) from 2008 till 2013.
