Malpas is an electoral district (ward) and coterminous community (parish) of the city of Newport, South Wales. The area is governed by the Newport City Council. Boundaries The ward is bounded by the A4042 Heidenheim Drive to the east, the city boundary to the north, Malpas brook to the west, and Bettws Lane, Llanover Close, and the western and northern edges of Graig Wood, Yewberry Lane and Grove Park Drive to the south. Name origin The name is French and comes from ''Mal'' (bad/poor) and ''Pas'' (passage/way). Earlier examples of the name include the definite article 'Le' and even an odd Welsh definite article 'Y' i.e. ''Le Malpas'', ''Y Malpas''. Archibald Wavell, 1st Earl Wavell
Field Marshal Archibald Percival Wavell, 1st Earl Wavell, (5 May 1883 – 24 May 1950) was a senior officer of the British Army. He served in the Second Boer War, the Bazar Valley Campaign and the First World War, during which he was wounded in the Second Battle of Ypres. In the Second World War, he served initially as Commander-in-Chief Middle East, in which role he led British forces to victory over the Italians in western Egypt and eastern Libya during Operation Compass in December 1940, only to be defeated by the German Army in the Western Desert in April 1941. He served as Commander-in-Chief, India, from July 1941 until June 1943 (apart from a brief tour as Commander of ABDACOM) and then served as Viceroy of India until his retirement in February 1947. River Usk
The River Usk (; cy, Afon Wysg) rises on the northern slopes of the Black Mountain (''y Mynydd Du''), Wales, in the westernmost part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Initially forming the boundary between Carmarthenshire and Powys, it flows north into Usk Reservoir, then east by Sennybridge to Brecon before turning southeast to flow by Talybont-on-Usk, Crickhowell and Abergavenny after which it takes a more southerly course. Beyond the eponymous town of Usk it passes the Roman legionary fortress of Caerleon to flow through the heart of the city of Newport and into the Severn Estuary at Uskmouth beyond Newport near the Newport Wetlands. South Wales Fire And Rescue Service
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS; cy, Gwasanaeth Tân ac Achub De Cymru) is the fire and rescue service covering the ten Welsh principal areas of Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan. SWFRS was created in 1996 by the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, which reformed Welsh local government. It was created by a merger of the previous fire brigades of Mid Glamorgan, South Glamorgan and Gwent. It covers an area of around with a population of around 1.5million. The fire authority which runs the service is a joint-board made up of councillors from the ten local authorities covered by the service. The Army Cadet Force (ACF), generally shortened to Army Cadets, is a national youth organisation sponsored by the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence and the British Army. Along with the Sea Cadet Corps and the Air Training Corps, the ACF make up the Community Cadet Forces. It is a separate organisation from the Combined Cadet Force which provides similar training within principally independent schools. Although sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, the ACF is not part of the British Army, and as such cadets are not subject to military 'call up'. St Joseph's Hospital is one of the largest privately owned hospitals in Wales. It is situated on Harding Avenue, Malpas, Newport. History Origins St Joseph’s was founded by the Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy, a Roman Catholic religious congregation, in 1946. The three founding sisters, Sister Josephine, Sister Alphonse and Sister Malachy, had previously been sent to London to train as nurses. In 1944, the Sisters of St Joseph registered charity purchased Claremont House in Malpas and turned it into a convent. Two years later St Joseph’s was officially granted the status of nursing home (a term for private hospitals coined by the government at the time), with the first surgical operation being performed in February 1946. Shaftesbury is a community (civil parish) and coterminous electoral district (ward) of the city of Newport, South Wales. The community is bounded by the River Usk to the east and southeast, the Great Western Main Line to the south, the A4042 road to the southwest as far as the Harlequin intersection, at which point the border diverts up Barrack Hill behind Harlequin Drive, Power Street and Lambert Close to meet the Monmouthshire Canal which then forms the western boundary as far as Bettws Lane Bridge.
