Malmesbury (UK Parliament Constituency)
Malmesbury was a parliamentary borough in Wiltshire, which elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons from 1275 until 1832, and then one member from 1832 until 1885, when the borough was abolished. History The borough was represented in Parliament from 1275. The constituency originally returned two members, but representation was reduced to one in the Great Reform Act of 1832 until the constituency was finally abolished in 1885. In the 17th century the constituency was dominated by the Earls of Suffolk, based in the family seat at nearby Charlton Park. Chippenham (UK Parliament Constituency)
Chippenham is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom since 2015 by Michelle Donelan, a Conservative, who also currently serves as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The 2010 constituency includes the Wiltshire towns of Bradford on Avon, Chippenham, Corsham and Melksham. A parliamentary borough of Chippenham was enfranchised in 1295. It sent two burgesses to Parliament until 1868 and one thereafter until the borough constituency was abolished in 1885. There was a county division constituency named after the town of Chippenham from 1885 to 1983, when the name of that constituency was changed to North Wiltshire. Following the 2003–2005 review into parliamentary representation in Wiltshire, the Boundary Commission created a new county constituency, reviving the name of Chippenham as a seat. James Stumpe
Sir James Stumpe (by 1519 – 29 April 1563), of Malmesbury and Bromham, Wiltshire, was an English clothier and Member of Parliament. He was the eldest son of wealthy clothier and MP, William Stumpe. He was knighted 1549 or later and succeeded his father in 1552. He took over as High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1552 on the death in office of his father. He was elected a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Wiltshire in March 1553 and for Malmesbury in 1555. He served again as High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1560–61. Among other lands, Stumpe owned the manors of Charlton and Hankerton, the latter purchased in 1553. He married twice: firstly Bridget, the daughter of Sir Edward Bayntun (or Baynton) of Bromham, with whom he had a daughter, and, secondly, in 1545, Isabel Isabel is a female name of Spanish origin. Edward Unton (high Sheriff)
Sir Edward Unton KB (1534 – 16 September 1582) was an English politician, high sheriff and Knight of the Bath. Edward was the eldest son of Sir Alexander Unton of Wadley House at Faringdon in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) and his wife, Cecily, daughter of Edward Bulstrode of Hedgerley in Buckinghamshire. He inherited his father's estates in 1547. Eight years later, he married Anne, the daughter of Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset and widow of John Dudley, 2nd Earl of Warwick; together they had seven children. His eldest son Edward became MP for Berkshire (1584, 1586). His younger son Sir Henry Unton was the English ambassador to France. Maurice Denys
Sir Maurice Denys (1516–1563) of Siston Court, near Bristol, Gloucestershire, and of St John's Street, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, was an English lawyer and property speculator during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time he served as a "powerful figure at the Court of Augmentations". He served as a Member of Parliament for Malmesbury in Wiltshire and as Treasurer of Calais. He was the builder of Siston Court in Gloucestershire, which survives largely unaltered since his time. His excessive speculation and borrowing caused the ruination of the Siston branch of the Denys family. William Stumpe
William Stumpe (by 1498 – 22 July 1552) of Malmesbury, Wiltshire, was a clothier and an English politician. Career Stumpe was a leading Wiltshire clothier. At the dissolution of Malmesbury Abbey, he was able to acquire the monastery site. He gave the nave of the abbey church to be the town's parish church. He filled the other monastic buildings with weaving looms, and built his own house in the precinct. He was also a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Malmesbury in 1529 and 1547. He was appointed High Sheriff of Wiltshire for 1551 until his death in 1552. Family Stumpe married, by 1519, Joyce Berkeley, daughter of James Berkeley of Bradley, Gloucestershire.
