Mallet Ranch
The Mallet Ranch is a historic ranch in Texas. It was established in Hockley County, Texas in the 1880s. It was used to raise Hereford cattle from the 1900s to the 1930s, with cotton fields added in the mid-1920s. By the late 1930s, oil was discovered. The ranch spanned 45,000 acres in 1990. History The ranch was established by David M. DeVitt and John Scharbauer in Hockley County, Texas in 1885. The name, "Mallet Ranch", came from a former ranch established by D. P. Atwood on the Texas-Mexican border in the early 1880s. DeVitt and Scharbauer acquired more land in Terry County, Cochran County and Yoakum County. The main ranchhouse, windmill and "several bunkhouses, sheds, barns, and corrals" were located in Levelland, Texas or Sundown, Texas six miles north of modern-day Whiteface, Texas. The county was created in 1876, but not organized until 1921. It is named for George Washington Hockley, a secretary of war of the Republic of Texas. Hereford (cattle)
The Hereford is a British breed of beef cattle originally from Herefordshire in the West Midlands of England. It has spread to many countries – there are more than five million purebred Hereford cattle in over fifty nations worldwide. The breed was first exported from Britain in 1817, initially to Kentucky. It spread across the United States and Canada, through Mexico, to the great beef-raising countries of South America. John Scharbauer
John Scharbauer (December 28, 1852 – October 20, 1941) was an American rancher. Born in New York, he moved to Texas in 1880 and became a large rancher in the Southwest. By the time of his death, his business empire included "operations in banking, corporate investments, oil lands, real estate and ranches which sprawled across four Texas counties and into New Mexico." Early life John Scharbauer was born on December 28, 1852, in Albany County, New York. His father was an immigrant from Germany. Scharbauer moved to Texas in 1880, at the age of twenty-eight, with US$2,000. He first worked as a restaurant dishwasher in Eastland, Texas to "get acquainted" with the local residents. Yoakum County, Texas
Yoakum County is a county located in the far western portion of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,694. Its county seat is Plains. The county was created in 1876 and later organized in 1907. It is named for Henderson King Yoakum, a Texas historian. Until the passage of a liquor sales referendum held on May 11, 2013, Yoakum had been one of 19 remaining prohibition or entirely dry counties within the state of Texas. Voters in Denver City also approved a separate referendum to permit liquor sales within that community. In 1965, Recorded Texas Historic Landmark number 5927 was placed at the county courthouse, acknowledging the creation of the county in 1876. Whiteface is a town in Cochran County, Texas, United States. The population was 449 at the 2010 census. History According to the '' Handbook of Texas'', "The name of the town came from rancher C. C. Slaughter's Whiteface Camp and Whiteface Pasture, which were named in turn for the cattle on his ranch." By 1924, Slaughter's son-in-law, Ira P. DeLoache, turned the ranch into the new community of Whiteface. The community was moved several miles the next year to be at the railroad. Oil was discovered near the town in 1937.
