Merlin Miller ( he, מרלין מילר; born 29 November 1950) is an Israeli former wheelchair basketball player, wheelchair tennis player and para swimmer who competed in the Summer Paralympic Games multiple times. Biography Miller was born in Baghdad, Iraq and emigrated with her parents to Israel when she was one month old. At nine months she contracted polio and in 1966 she began practicing sports at the Israel Sports Center for the Disabled. At the 1968 Summer Paralympics Miller competed in two swimming events and gained medals in both: a silver medal in the women's 3×25 metre individual medley open event and a bronze medal in the women's 50 metre backstroke special class event. As a member of Israel women's national wheelchair basketball team Miller took part in the Paralympic Games in 1968 and again from 1980 to 1988. Israel Sports Center For The Disabled
The Israel Sports Center for the Disabled (ISCD; ) is an Israeli institution operated by ILAN aimed at rehabilitation of physically disabled people. History The ISCD was established in 1960 in Ramat Gan by ILAN activist Betty Dubiner. The land lot was provided by the municipality of Ramat Gan and the initial facilities were constructed partly due to a donation by Bella and Samuel Spewack from income made on their play Kiss Me, Kate. It was first of its kind in Israel and one of the few operating at the time worldwide. In its early years, the center was mostly used by Polio virus victims. In later years it was adjusted to serve those with Cerebral palsy, Israeli citizens injured during their military service with the IDF, survivors of car accidents and terrorist attacks and others with disabilities. Polio
Poliomyelitis, commonly shortened to polio, is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. Approximately 70% of cases are asymptomatic; mild symptoms which can occur include sore throat and fever; in a proportion of cases more severe symptoms develop such as headache, neck stiffness, and paresthesia. These symptoms usually pass within one or two weeks. A less common symptom is permanent paralysis, and possible death in extreme cases.. Para swimming is an adaptation of the sport of swimming for athletes with disabilities. Para swimmers compete at the Summer Paralympic Games and at other sports competitions throughout the world. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee. Both men and women compete in para swimming, racing against competitors of their own gender. Swimming has been a part of the Paralympic program since the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. Rules Rules for the sport are adapted from those set forth by the International Swimming Federation (FINA). Swimmers compete individually in backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, individual medley, and as teams in relay races.
