Malfunkshun
Malfunkshun is an alternative rock band formed in 1980 by Andrew Wood and his brother Kevin Wood. The band formed around the same time as other Washington state bands such as The U-Men (1980), Melvins (1983), Green River (1984), Soundgarden (1984) and Skin Yard (1985). History Bainbridge Island, Washington brothers Andrew and Kevin Wood, along with Dave Hunt and Dave Rees formed Malfunkshun, originally as a four-piece. David Hunt (1964-2009) and Dave Rees played with Malfunkshun for only one show, the former on drums and the latter on bass. After Rees and Hunt left, Andy took over bass and drummer Regan Hagar was recruited from Maggot Brains, establishing the band's definitive power trio lineup. During performances, each band member had an alter ego. Andrew's was L'Andrew the Love Child, Kevin was Kevinstein and Regan became Thundarr. Andrew Wood (singer)
Andrew Patrick Wood (January 8, 1966 – March 19, 1990) was an American musician. He was the lead singer and lyricist for the alternative rock bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. Wood formed Malfunkshun in 1980 with his older brother Kevin Wood on guitar and Regan Hagar on drums. The band used alter ego personas onstage, with Wood using the name Landrew the Love Child. Though the band only had two songs released, "With Yo' Heart (Not Yo' Hands)" and "Stars-n-You", on the '' Deep Six'' compilation album, they are often cited as being among the "founding fathers" of the Seattle grunge movement. During his time in Malfunkshun, Wood started relying heavily on drugs, entering rehab in 1985. Kevin Wood (born September 16, 1961) is an American musician known for playing lead guitar in various Seattle-based bands he founded during the Grunge era in the Pacific Northwest. Early life Wood had younger brothers Brian and Andrew Wood. The Wood family lived the longest on Bainbridge Island, Washington, which is a short ferry ride from Seattle. All three brothers had musical aspirations, Kevin Wood played guitar, and both Andrew and Brian learned to sing. Regan Hagar
Regan Hagar is an American musician. Primarily a drummer, he also plays keyboard and guitar on occasion. He was the drummer in Malfunkshun from 1980 to 1988, featuring Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone on vocals and Kevin Wood on guitar. He had previously been in the band Maggot Brains, but joined Malfunkshun when their drummer, David Hunt, quit the band after the first show. Hagar has also performed in Satchel with Shawn Smith, and in Brad with Smith and Stone Gossard (from Pearl Jam and formerly Mother Love Bone). ''Deep Six'' is a 1986 compilation album featuring six Seattle-based rock bands. It was the first release by C/Z Records, with a catalogue number of CZ01 for 2,000 copies. The album was reissued as a joint C/Z Records/A&M Records release on April 5, 1994. Development The album was compiled by Seattle locals Chris Hanzsek and Tina Casale of CZ Records to showcase what was going on in the Seattle rock community at this time by drawing on the talents of six like-minded bands. The album was not a commercial success; however, it is vital to the history of grunge. It represents the early recordings of a handful of bands that would later become legendary, and dictated what grunge was by establishing its concepts and nuances of sound. Shawn Smith (musician)
Shawn Smith (October 28, 1965 – April 3, 2019) was an American singer, songwriter and musician. He was a member of the Seattle-based alternative and indie rock bands Brad, Satchel, Pigeonhed, and The Twilight Singers, and also performed as a solo artist. Smith cited Freddie Mercury, Prince, and KISS as early influences. Other influences he noted are Steven Tyler, Bon Scott, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Andy Wood, and Chris Cornell. Biography Smith was born in Spokane, Washington in 1965 and attended high school in Bakersfield, California, relocating to Seattle in 1987. He befriended drummer Regan Hagar while both were working at Tower Records in the late ‘80s. The pair formed Satchel shortly thereafter, and eventually, formed Brad with Stone Gossard and Jeremy Toback. Mother Love Bone
Mother Love Bone was an American rock band that formed in Seattle, Washington in 1988. The band was active from 1988 to 1990. Frontman Andrew Wood's personality and lyrics helped to catapult the group to the top of the burgeoning late 1980s/early 1990s Seattle music scene. Wood died only days before the scheduled release of the band's debut album, ''Apple'', thus ending the group's hopes of success. The album was finally released a few months later. Brad is an American rock band that formed in Seattle, Washington in 1992. Green River (band)
Green River was an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984. Although the band had very little commercial impact outside their native Seattle, Green River were pioneers of the grunge music genre. The grunge style was featured both in Green River's own music and the music its members would create in future bands, including Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam. Green River reunited for several live shows in 2008 and 2009. Devilhead
Devilhead were an American alternative rock group formed by brothers Kevin Wood (guitar) and Brian Wood (vocals), who were both elder brothers of the late Andrew Wood, the singer of Malfunkshun (which also featured Kevin) and Mother Love Bone, in 1994 in Seattle, Washington following the breakup of their previous group The Fire Ants. Both Kevin and Brian were the only permanent members of the group and they released two albums, '' Your Ice Cream's Dirty'' in 1994 on Loosegroove Records, with album art by Regan Hagar; and ''Pest Control'' in 1996, which featured a number of contributors including bassist John Waterman and guitarist John McBain, both of the band Hater. Skin Yard
Skin Yard was an American grunge band from Seattle, Washington, who were active from 1985 to 1992. The group never gained a mainstream audience, but were an influence on several of their grunge contemporaries, including Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, and Green River. History Career The band was formed in January 1985 by Daniel House and Jack Endino, who were subsequently joined by Ben McMillan and Matt Cameron. Skin Yard played its first official concert on June 7, 1985, opening for the U-Men. A few months later, Skin Yard contributed two songs to the now-renowned '' Deep Six'' compilation. Satchel (band)
Satchel was an alternative rock band from Seattle. Their final lineup featured Shawn Smith (vocals, piano, guitar, bass), Regan Hagar (drums, bass), and John Hoag (guitar, bass). History Satchel was originally formed under the name Bliss by vocalist Shawn Smith and drummer Regan Hagar, after their previous band Brad (which also featured guitarist Stone Gossard) went on hiatus. They recruited guitarist John Hoag, bassist Cory Kane and Jefferson Bennett on saxophone. However they were met with a copyright name challenge. As a result, they settled on the name Satchel. Bennett left the band. Satchel released their first album ''EDC'' in 1994.
