Maleny (pronounced ''mah-lay-knee'') is a rural town and locality in the Sunshine Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. At the , the locality of Maleny had a population of 3,959 people. Maleny was a timber town until the early 1920s and then was a centre of dairy production and fruit growing. Geography Maleny is north of Brisbane on the Blackall Range overlooking the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Nearby towns include Landsborough, Montville, Peachester, Palmwoods and Hunchy. Blackall Range
The Blackall Range is a mountain range in South East Queensland, Australia. The first European explorer in the area was Ludwig Leichhardt. It was named after Samuel Blackall, the second Governor of Queensland. The Blackall Range dominates the hinterland area of the Sunshine Coast, west of Nambour. Maleny, Mapleton, Montville and Flaxton are the main settlements located on the range. The Stanley River rises from the southern slopes. Baroon Pocket Dam is a reservoir on Obi Obi Creek which drains the north west slopes of the range. Mary Cairncross Reserve marks the site of the first settler's house on the Blackall Range. Curramore Sanctuary, Mapleton Falls National Park and Kondalilla National Park are also located on the range. A number of lookouts on the range provide views towards the coast. Mary Cairncross Reserve
The Mary Cairncross Reserve is a conservation park located on the Blackall Range east of Maleny, in the Sunshine Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. Maleny is approximately north of Brisbane and west of Caloundra. The reserve is positioned in the mountain rainforests of the Maleny region overlooking the Glass House Mountains. Geology The Region holds many of the large predominate landforms in Queensland, the most recognisable is the Glass House Mountains. The Glass House Mountains were formed thousands of years ago when the outer layer of soil and rock eroded from the extinct volcanic summit. The dirt and soil located in the region is very rich and healthy, due to the high quantity of volcanic rock decomposed in the soil. Volcanic rock contains high amounts of nutrients. The Mary River (Kabi Kabi: ''Moocooboola'') is a major river system located in the South East and Wide Bay–Burnett regions of Queensland, Australia. Etymology The river was traditionally named ''Moocooboola'' by the indigenous Australian Kabi people. The river was named ''Wide Bay River'' on 10 May 1842 by early European explorers, Andrew Petrie and Henry Stuart Russell. Baroon Pocket Dam
The Baroon Pocket Dam is a rock and earth-fill embankment dam with an un-gated spillway across the Obi Obi Creek, in North Maleny, Sunshine Coast Region, in South East Queensland, Australia. The main purpose of the dam is for potable water supply. The impounded reservoir is called Lake Baroon. Just below the dam is Obi Obi Gorge, one of the few remaining places left where the Mary River cod maintains a wild population. After its initial filling, the dam reached its lowest level between December 2002 and February 2003 at 50% capacity. Glass House Mountains (Queensland)
The Glass House Mountains are a cluster of thirteen hills that rise abruptly from the coastal plain on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. The highest hill is Mount Beerwah at 556 metres above sea level, but the most identifiable of all the hills is Mount Tibrogargan which from certain angles bears a resemblance to a face staring east towards the ocean. The Glass House Mountains are located near Beerburrum State Forest and Steve Irwin Way. Hunchy is a rural locality in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. In the , Hunchy had a population of 592 people. Geography Hunchy is in the foothills of the Blackall Range and was first called Hunchback. Peachester is a rural town and locality in the Sunshine Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Peachester had a population of 1,357 people. Geography Peachester is in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The D'Aguliar Range commences in the north-west of the locality. Kilcoy–Beerwah Road runs through from west to east.
