Alia Malek (born December 29, 1974) is an American journalist and lawyer. Early life and career Malek was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1974. Her parents had immigrated to the United States from Syria. Malek graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1996. She then earned a J.D. degree at Georgetown University Law Center. She worked as a civil rights lawyer at the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division and later went back to school to obtain a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. She published her first book in 2009, ''A Country Called Amreeka''. From 2011 to 2013, she lived in Damascus, Syria. Her memoir ''The Home That Was Our Country'' is based on this period. Amy Malek (born c. 1979/1980), is an American assistant professor, scholar, and sociocultural anthropologist. She serves as the endowed Chair and Director in Iranian and Persian Gulf Studies (IPGS) at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. Her work focuses on the migration, citizenship, memory, and culture in the Iranian diaspora. Malek is an Iranian-American. Education and career Malek has a bachelor's degree (2003) from Emory University; and a Master of Arts degree (2005) in Near Eastern studies from New York University. Frederic Vincent Malek (December 22, 1936 – March 24, 2019) was an American business executive, political advisor, and philanthropist. He was a president of Marriott Hotels and Northwest Airlines and an assistant to United States Presidents Richard Nixon (in whose purge of Jewish government employees Malek would take an active role) and George H. W. Bush. Active in politics for more than fifty years, Malek also served as a National Finance Committee Chair of Sen. George Malek-Yonan
George Malek-Yonan (1924-2014) was an Iranian Assyrian international attorney, politician and athlete, and father of actress Rosie Malek-Yonan. Biography The Assyrian Malek family claims to trace its roots back eleven centuries. During the Assyrian genocide of 1914–1918, Malek-Yonan's family fled to Baghdad, in the Great Exodus from Urmia where he was born on 11 October 1924. When still a young child, his family migrated back to Iran and finally settled in Tehran. His parents were Yosip (Joseph) and Suriya, both Assyrian. His older sister, Florence, was Knighted in the early 70s and lived in Switzerland where she died on 18 February 2007. Leona Alford Malek (1878-1951) was a home economist, editor, writer, and radio personality who used various pen names such as Jean Prescott Adams, and was one of several women who published and presented under the name of Prudence Penny. Milton Malek-Yonan (1904–2002) was an Assyrian entrepreneur and inventor. Biography Milton Malek-Yonan was born to Assyrian parents in Urmia, Iran in 1904. He was a descendant of one of the oldest and most prominent Assyrian families, the Malek family or tribe that came from Assyrian village of Geogtapah, Urmi, a region in Northwestern Iran. The family dates back nearly eleven centuries. Miklós Malek (born 3 June 1945, in Budapest, Hungary) is a Hungarian award winning composer and conductor. He has won many awards: Táncdalfesztivál - Hangszerelési díj (1969), Lyra-díj (1994), Fényes Szabolcs-díj (1996), EMeRTon-díj (2000), Erkel Ferenc-díj (2004) and Artisjus Életmű-díj (2004) He was admitted to the Franz Liszt Academy of Music where he graduated in 1970 obtaining the diploma after studying classical music.
