Maldives International
The Maldives International is an open international badminton tournament in Maldives organized by the Badminton Association of Maldives and sanctioned by the Badminton Asia Confederation and Badminton World Federation. This tournament has been an International Challenge level before it went into hiatus in 2014. This tournament held at the Malé sports complex, and offered world ranking points with total prize money US$15,000. In 2010, India won two titles from the men's and women's singles event. Anand Pawar won the men's singles title after defeated Dinuka Karunaratne of Sri Lanka with the score 21–14, 21–18, while his compatriot Trupti Murgunde won the women's singles title after Ann Venice Alcala Malvinne of Philippines retired with a hamstring injury at the score 21–10, 11–3. Badminton
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been called by the umpire, service judge, or (in their absence) the opposing side. The shuttlecock is a feathered or (in informal matches) plastic projectile which flies differently from the balls used in many other sports. Kennevic Asuncion
Kennevic Asuncion (Chinese: 洪育雄; born March 21, 1980) is a male badminton player from the Philippines. He was born in Barbaza, Antique and is the son of former Philippine Badminton Team Coach Nelson Asuncion. He plays doubles with his sister Kennie Asuncion. The brother-sister team used to host a now defunct local badminton TV show, ''Badminton Extreme'' along with their father. The show was canceled due to the siblings' training for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In its steed a magazine called Badminton Extreme was released. He won several international tournaments including the Peru Open. Career Asuncion played at the 2006 Philippine Open Grand Prix Gold in mixed doubles. He beat Indonesia's Tri Kusharjanto and Minarti Timur 21-15, 21-10 before losing to Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thungthongkam of Thailand in the finals. Zulfadli Zulkiffli
Zulfadli bin Zulkiffli (born 11 February 1993) is a former Malaysian badminton player. He was the boys' singles gold medalists at the 2011 Asian and World Junior Championships, also at the Commonwealth Youth Games. In 2018, Zulkiffli was found guilty by the Badminton World Federation and barred from all badminton-related activities for 20 years over match fixing violations. Grace Gao (, born October 17, 1989) is a Chinese-born Canadian female badminton player from Calgary, Alberta. She began playing the sport in her hometown Beijing, and became a naturalized citizen of Canada in 2009, after immigrating with her parents at age 14. Toby Ng
Tobias Ng (born 8 October 1985) is a Canadian badminton player. Born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Ng's father is from Hong Kong and his mother from Macau. He started playing badminton at the Kensington Community Centre, when he was about six years old. He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the mixed doubles event with partner Grace Gao. His younger brother, Derrick Ng, is also an elite level player. Since 2020, Toby coaches advanced to professional level athletes at the Bellevue Badminton Club. Derek Wong (born Wong Zi Liang, traditional Chinese: 黃梓良, 13 January 1989) is a retired Singaporean badminton player. Wong is a two-time Olympian, who took part at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics, where he was flag bearer in the latter's Parade of Nations. Early life Wong was born on 13 January 1989, in Singapore, to parents Wong Shoon Keat and Irene Lee. He grew up in a badminton-loving family with three other brothers (Shawn, Jamie and Jason). Both his parents are former national champions and they own a badminton shop at the old Singapore Badminton Hall. Wong started playing badminton, at age 5 when his father took him to the hall to play badminton for the first time. Since then, he would do his school homework at the shop before playing badminton with some friendly uncles in the hall till his parents closed the shop for the day. Ashton Chen Yong Zhao
Ashton Chen or Chen Yong Zhao (; born 9 September 1989) is a Singaporean retired badminton player and a former national champion. Career Chen was part of the South East Asian Games men's team that won silver medal in the 2007 edition and bronze medals in the 2009, 2011 editions. In 2012, he won the men's singles title at the Singaporean National Badminton Championships. At the BWF event tournaments, he has won the men's singles title at the 2007 Waikato and 2011 Smiling Fish Thailand International tournament, and in the men's doubles, he won the 2011 Maldives International tournament. Chen quits the national team on 11 April 2014 after playing his final game for Singapore in the Djarum Superliga 2014 tournament.
