''Maldives Independent'' is a news outlet which is based in Maldives. It was conceived in 2004 as Minivan News but was renamed to Maldives Independent in 2015. History The outlet was first named Minivan News ('Minivan' meaning Independent) founded by members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on 29 November 2004. In 2014, the office of Minivan News was attacked following the disappearance of former journalist Ahmed Rilwan, which was condemned by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) along with Maldives Journalists Association (MJA). On 31 July 2015, Minivan News was renamed to the Maldives Independent. In 2016, Police entered into the headquarters of the Maldives Independent, suspected to be related to the '' Stealing Paradise'' documentary by Al Jazeera. Maldivian Democratic Party
The Maldivian Democratic Party (, ''Dhivehi Rayyithunge Demokretik Paati''; MDP) is the first political party formed in the Republic of Maldives. The party is supportive of the promotion of human rights and democracy in the Maldives. It won the first ever multi-party elections in the Maldives with the support from all the other political parties in the 2008 elections against then president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. History There had not been political parties in the Maldives since 1952. The MDP initially submitted its registration on 24 February 2001. In 2001, the party's first president was Qasim Ibrahim. Although the Maldivian Constitution allows political parties to operate, the MDP's application was rebuffed. After the people fighting for their rights on the street and the death of Evan Naseem, MDP declared its existence in exile from Sri Lanka on 10 November 2003.
