Maldives Film Awards
The Maldives Film Awards are presented by Maldives Film Association to honour both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Maldivian film industry. The ceremony had been sponsored by various private organizations in the past including Enchanteur and Ilsha. A live ceremony was broadcast to television audiences. History The Maldives Film Awards were first introduced in 2011. In the first awards function, held on 2 July 2011, awards were given to films released in 2008 and 2009; picked from 5th Gaumee Film Awards held in 2007. The association attempted to host the fourth edition of the award in 2016, but it was cancelled following several delays. Later in 2020, the association announced the fourth ceremony of the award which got delayed further due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Awards Awards are given in the following categories. Television Maldives is the public service broadcasting TV channel of the Maldives. It was formed on March 29, 1978. Haveeru Daily (Dhivehi: ހަވީރ ދުވަހު ނޫސް) was the longest serving daily newspaper in the Maldives, established on January 1, 1979. History When local newspaper ''Moonlight'' ceased publication on December 9, 1978, Haveeru was registered on December 28, 1978, to fill the gap created by the absence of a newspaper. The first issue of Haveeru was brought out on January 1, 1979, under the proprietorship of Mohamed Zahir Hussain, who is a close friend of the President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and has been serving Minister level positions of the government since 1978 The name The name ''Haveeru'' symbolises the onset of the cool evening time after the heat of the day, which is also the time when the newspaper is brought out.
