Maldegem (; vls, Moaldegem), earlier spelled Maldeghem, is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the villages of Maldegem, Adegem and . and have always been separate hamlets of Maldegem. On 1 January 2018, Maldegem had a total population of 23,689. The total area is which gives a population density of 250 inhabitants per km². The Stoomcentrum Maldegem is located at the former NMBS railway station at Maldegem. World War II airfield An airfield established in 1939 near Maldegem was taken over by the invading German army in 1940 and used by the Luftwaffe. Seized by British Forces in September 1944, it was designated "Advanced Landing Ground B-65". Stoomcentrum Maldegem
Steamtrain Maldegem-Eeklo (SME), is a heritage railway located at Maldegem in northern Belgium. It is located at the former NMBS station. Standard gauge trains run on the line to Eeklo, where the SCM has its own station. Adegem
Adegem is a village and ''deelgemeente'' (sub-municipality) in the municipality of Maldegem in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The village is located about east of Bruges. History The area around Adegem was mapped between 1993 and 1995, and multiple structures were discovered from the Bronze Age. The village was first mentioned in 840 as Addingahim, and means "settlement of the people of Ado (person)". In 1127, Robert de Jonge, the owner of Castle Raverschoot near Adegem, was implicated in the murder of Charles the Good, Count of Flanders, and his castle was destroyed. For most of its history, Adegem was a cultivation settlement belonging to the ''amt'' Maldegem. During the 19th century, Adegem started to develop into a village. Advanced Landing Ground
Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) were temporary advance airfields constructed by the Allies during World War II during the liberation of Europe. They were built in the UK prior to the invasion and thereafter in northwest Europe from 6 June 1944 to V-E Day, 7 May 1945. Unlike the permanent airfields built in the United Kingdom and designed for the strategic bombardment of Germany, the tactical combat airfields on the continent were temporary, often improvised airfields to be used by the tactical air forces to support the advancing ground armies engaged on the battlefield. Joanna Courtmans
Joanna Courtmans, born Joanna-Desideria Berchmans (6 September 1811 – 22 September 1890), was a Flemish writer. Biography Her father was mayor of Oudegem, and she spent her first years at the local village school, later at the age of 9, she was sent to a boarding school in Wallonia. Between 1835 and 1844, she lived in Ghent, initially with her aunt Colette Tanghe. In 1836, she married Jan Baptiste Courtmans, a teacher in Ghent, who was one of the co-founders of the ''Gentse Maetschappij van Vlaemsche Letteroefening''. This brought her into contact with the Flemish movement, and Prudens van Duyse, Frans Rens, Ferdinand Snellaert, and Jan Frans Willems. It inspired her to write an historical novel ''Bertha Baldwin'' (1871), about the 14th century battle of the Flemings against France. Adria is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Rovigo in the Veneto region of northern Italy, situated between the mouths of the rivers Adige and Po River, Po. Knesselare
Knesselare () is a village and ''deelgemeente'' in the municipality of Aalter and a former municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprised the towns of Knesselare proper and . The municipality's name is derived from the Germanic words "''klisse''" (herb) and "''laar''", (a soggy brushwood terrain), and was first attested in 1128. Knesselare became an independent parish in 1171. It was originally a village ''heerlijkheid'', but during the rule of Louis II, Count of Flanders (1330–1384), the area had been split into four different administrations. Eeklo
Eeklo () is a Belgian municipality in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises only the town of Eeklo proper. The name ''Eeklo'' comes from the contraction of "eke" and "lo", two Old German words meaning ''oak'' and ''sparse woods'' (compare English ''Oakley''). History Origins and Middle Ages There are not many traces of early habitation in the Eeklo area. It is presumed that some oaks would have attracted the attention of travellers on the Roman road that ran along the local sandbar among the marshes. By 1240, a town had grown here and had already become important enough to warrant a civic charter by Jeanne of Constantinople, Countess of Flanders. Sluis
Sluis (; zea, label= Zeelandic, Sluus ; french: Écluse) is a town and municipality located in the west of Zeelandic Flanders, in the south-western Dutch province of Zeeland.
