Malcolm Eccles
Malcolm Eccles (born 1969) is a utilities senior executive. He is currently the chief executive officer and managing director of the Basslink group based in Melbourne, Australia. Eccles was born in Whitehaven, Cumbria. In addition to his work with Basslink, he also serves as a non-executive director on the boards of City Gas (Singapore) and Gippsland Water (Australia). He has also been a director and executive committee member of the International Cable Protection Committee (ICPC) since 2007. Eccles has been involved in high-voltage direct current and submarine cable technology since 2002. His engineering career commenced in 1986 when he served an apprenticeship with British Nuclear Fuels Ltd (BNFL). He stayed with BNFL for 16 years, leaving the organisation in 2002 to join Siemens PTD (power, transmission and distribution), now called Siemens Energy Sector. Moyle Interconnector
The Moyle Interconnector is a 500megawatt HVDC link between Scotland and Northern Ireland, running between Auchencrosh in Ayrshire and Ballycronan More in County Antrim. It went into service in 2001 and is owned and operated by Mutual Energy. Specifications The HVDC Moyle Interconnector has a capacity of 500MW. It consists of two coaxial 250kV DC cables with integrated return conductors (IRC), each cable having a transmission capacity of 250MW. The IRCs have failed through the events below, and their function restored by laying separate return conductors. The converter stations are equipped with light-triggered thyristors. Basslink
The Basslink () electricity interconnector is a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable linking the electricity grids of the states of Victoria and Tasmania in Australia, crossing Bass Strait, connecting the Loy Yang Power Station, Victoria on the Australian mainland to the George Town substation in northern Tasmania. Basslink is bidirectional and enables Hydro Tasmania to supply some of the peak load capacity to the Australian mainland and take some of the excess power from the mainland when the generation on the mainland exceeds the demand. Financial benefits from the Basslink investment included reduced or deferred need to invest in further base load generation facilities, and potential to profit from selling peak load power into a market in which prices are generally higher, and because the cable was also used to supply power to Tasmania in times of drought, as most of Tasmania's electricity generation is hydroelectricity. British Nuclear Fuels Ltd
British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL) was a nuclear energy and fuels company owned by the UK Government. It was a manufacturer of nuclear fuel (notably MOX), ran reactors, generated and sold electricity, reprocessed and managed spent fuel (mainly at Sellafield), and decommissioned nuclear plants and other similar facilities. It was created in February 1971 from the de-merger of the production division of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). Until 2003, its headquarters were at Risley, near Warrington, England.
