The Road Transport Department ( Malay: ''Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan'', abbreviated JPJ; Jawi: ), is a government department under the Malaysian Ministry of Transport. This department is responsible for registration of vehicles in Malaysia and issuing driving licence & vehicle number plates. Transportation in Malaysia started to develop during British colonial rule, and the country's transport network is now diverse and developed. Malaysia's road network is extensive, covering 290,099.38 kilometres, including 2,016.05 km of expressways (in 2021). The main highway of the country extends over 800 km, reaching the Thai border from Singapore. Road signs in Malaysia are standardised traffic sign, road signs similar to those used in Europe but with certain distinctions. Until the early 1980s, Malaysia closely practice in road sign design, with diamond-shaped warning signs and circular restrictive signs to regulate traffic. Signs usually use the Transport (typeface), Transport Heavy (cf. the second image shown to the right) font on non-tolled roads and highways. Tolled expressways signs use a font specially designed for the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) which is LLM Lettering. It has two type of typefaces, LLM Narrow and LLM Normal. Driving Licence In Malaysia
A driving licence is required in Malaysia (Malay language, Malay: ''Lesen Memandu Malaysia - LMM'') before a person is allowed to drive a motor vehicle of any description on a road in Malaysia under Section 26(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333). Under section 26(1) of the Road Transport Act, an individual must possess a valid driving licence before being permitted to drive on the road, or can be prosecuted under section 26(2).
