Malaysia At The Olympics
Malaysia first participated at the Olympic Games in 1956, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except when Malaysia participated in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. Malaysia made their debut at the Winter Olympic Games in 2018. The Federation of Malaya (now the states comprising West Malaysia) competed as ''Malaya'' (MAL) in the 1956 and 1960 Games. The present day state of Sabah sent an independent team to the 1956 Games as North Borneo, and Singapore also competed at the Olympics from 1948 to 1960. After these British colonies federated to form an independent ''Malaysia'' in 1963, the nation competed under that name for the first time at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Malaysia would inherit Malaya's code MAL until 1988 when it started competing under its present code MAS. Olympic Council Of Malaysia
Olympic Council of Malaysia, or commonly OCM or MOM, ( ms, Majlis Olimpik Malaysia, IOC code: MAS) is the National Olympic Committee representing Malaysia. It is also the body responsible for Malaysia's representation at the Commonwealth Games. History The body was founded in 1953 as the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council (FMOC). The FMOC received its recognition as the National Olympic Committee of the Federation of Malaya in May 1954. On 16 September 1963, Singapore and the British crown colonies of North Borneo and Sarawak joined the Federation of Malaya to form Malaysia. On 5 May 1964, the Singapore Olympic and Sports Council, the Sarawak Sports Olympic Committee and the Sabah Olympic Committee and the FMOC was merged to form the Olympic Council of Malaysia. Sidek Brothers
The Sidek badminton family is a Malaysian family with a significant history within professional badminton. The patriarch of the family was an avid badminton fan, Sidek Abdullah Kamar (1936–2005), who himself was a former player turned senior coach. He started to train his sons from an early age at their house in Banting. As soon as his sons were spotted by Khoo Teng Yuen, a BAM coach, he transferred them to a prestigious secondary school known as Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur, where he (Khoo) was based. The training ultimately culminated in regaining the Thomas Cup in 1992 after a lapse of 25 years. The five Sidek brothers, who were also world-class players, began their run of success in the early 1980s. 1972 Summer Olympics Medal Table
The 1972 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XX Olympiad, took place in Munich, West Germany, from 26 August through 11 September 1972. A total of 7,134 athletes from 121 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed in 195 events from 23 sports. Men's indoor handball, slalom canoeing and kayaking all made their Olympic debuts, while archery returned to the Olympic program after a 52-year hiatus. Rhodesia, like South Africa, was still segregated in 1972 and yet the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted to invite Rhodesia to the 1972 Games. Eventually, African nations protested this invitation and threatened to boycott the Games. Three days before the opening ceremonies the IOC voted to rescind their invitation and exclude the Rhodesian athletes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC; french: link=no, Comité international olympique, ''CIO'') is a non-governmental sports organisation based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Lee Chong Wei
Datuk Lee Chong Wei (; born 21 October 1982) is a Malaysian former badminton player. As a singles player, Lee was ranked first worldwide for 349 weeks, including a 199-week streak from 21 August 2008 to 14 June 2012. He is the fifth Malaysian player after Foo Kok Keong, Rashid Sidek, Roslin Hashim and Wong Choong Hann to achieve such a ranking (since official rankings were first kept in the 1980s), and is the only Malaysian shuttler who has held the number one ranking for more than a year. Lee is a triple silver medalist at the Olympic Games, and the sixth Malaysian to win an Olympic medal. He won his first silver medal in 2008, also the first time a Malaysian had reached the finals in the men's singles event.
