Malawi Cricket Association
Cricket Malawi, officially the Malawi Cricket Union, is the official governing body of the sport of cricket in Malawi for both the men's and women's national teams. Its current headquarters is in Blantyre, Malawi. Malawi Cricket Union is Malawi's representative at the International Cricket Council (ICC) and is an associate member and has been a member of that body since 1998. It is also a member of the African Cricket Association The Africa Cricket Association (ACA) is an international body which coordinates the development of cricket in Africa. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the world governing body of cricket. The Africa Cricket Association (ACA) is an international body which coordinates the development of cricket in Africa. The ACA was founded in 1997, and has 23 member countries. The role of the ACA includes promoting the development of cricket in Africa and organising some regional tournaments. These have included the ACA Africa T20 Cup and the Africa Women's Twenty20 Championship, as well as intercontinental tournaments like the Afro-Asia Cup. The role of the ACA is complementary to the International Cricket Council (ICC), which organises the regional qualifying tournaments for global events. Blantyre
Blantyre () is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce, and its second largest city, with an enumerated 800,264 inhabitants . It is sometimes referred to as the commercial and industrial capital of Malawi as opposed to the political capital, Lilongwe. It is the capital of the country's Southern Region as well as the Blantyre District. History Blantyre was founded in 1876 through the missionary work of the Church of Scotland. It was named after Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, birthplace of the explorer David Livingstone. The site was chosen by Henry Henderson, who was joined there on 23 October 1876 by Dr T. T. Malawi (; or aláwi Tumbuka: ''Malaŵi''), officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in Southeastern Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. Malawi National Cricket Team
The Malawian national cricket team is the men's team that represents Malawi in international cricket. History Malawi was previously a member of the East and Central Africa Cricket Conference, which was a member of the ICC from 1989 to 2003 and fielded the East and Central Africa cricket team in the ICC Trophy. From the 1970s Malawi played regular international tournaments against other East and Central African teams, and occasionally touring teams from England. In 2002 Malawi participated in the Africa Cup in which 10 nations took part. They came last in the group, losing all 4 matches. They became an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2003 and an associate member in 2017. Malawi Women's National Cricket Team
The Malawi women's national cricket team represents the country of Malawi in women's cricket matches. In April 2018, the International Cricket Council (ICC) granted full Women's Twenty20 International (WT20I) status to all its members. Therefore, all Twenty20 matches played between Malawi women and another international side since 1 July 2018 have been full WT20I matches. Malawi's first WT20I matches were contested as part of the Botswana 7s tournament in August 2018 against Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Sierra Leone and Zambia women's national cricket team, Zambia (Zambia's matches were not classified as WT20Is as they had a Botswanan player in their squad). ICC Members
The International Cricket Council (ICC) was founded at Lord's on 15 June 1909 as the Imperial Cricket Conference, with Australia, England, and South Africa as its founding members. In the beginning, only countries within the Commonwealth could join. India, New Zealand and the West Indies joined in 1926, and Pakistan joined in 1953. In 1961, South Africa resigned from the Conference due to their leaving the Commonwealth, but they continued to play Test cricket until their international exile in 1970.
