Malapoa College, originally British Secondary School (BSS), is an English-language secondary school in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Originally a school for dependents of employees of the pre-independence Vanuatu government and foreign expatriates, it opened in 1966. it had 755 students. A new school is scheduled to open in 2018. Port Vila (french: Port-Vila), or simply Vila (; french: Vila; bi, Vila ), is the capital and largest city of Vanuatu. It is located on the island of Efate. Its population in the last census (2009) was 44,040, an increase of 35% on the previous census result (29,356 in 1999). In 2009, the population of Port Vila formed 18.8% of the country's population, and 66.9% of the population of Efate. On the south coast of the island of Efate, in Shefa Province, Port Vila is the economic and commercial centre of Vanuatu. The ''Vanuatu Daily Post'' is a newspaper published in Port Vila in Vanuatu. It is the only daily newspaper in Vanuatu. The newspaper's founder, Marc Neil-Jones, had been the victim of physical attacks supported by government ministers during his time at the newspaper. Work permit controversy Dan McGarry, the newspaper's media director and a Canadian national, announced on 7 November 2019 that the Vanuatu government had refused to renew his work permit. McGarry stated that the 'overt reason' was that his role should have been 'localized' (filled by a Vanuatu citizen) but claimed that the 'real reason' was that the Daily Post's reporting had discomforted the government. He has appealed against the decision. On 6 July 2019, the ''Daily Post'' published an article detailing the deportation of six Chinese nationals by the Vanuatuan government. Yanjian Group
Yanjian Group is a Chinese construction and engineering company. It is one of the 250 largest international contractors in 2013 as reported by Engineering News-Record magazine. Foreign aid projects sponsored by China are a frequent source of work for the company. The Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre is a theatre in Colombo, Sri Lanka built in 2011 by China as a gift to enhance ties with Sri Lanka. Construction of the 1288 seat venue was handled by the Yanjian Group. In 2013 in Ghana, it built a six story building for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, funded by a no-interest loan from China. Merilyn Tahi
Merilyn Tahi (born 26 June 1950) is a campaigner against domestic violence from Vanuatu, who co-founded Vanuatu Women's Centre and was the first woman from the country to become a municipal councillor. She was recognised as the fortieth Commonwealth Point of Light in 2018. Early life and education Tahi was born on 26 June 1950 on Ambae. The eldest of seven siblings, her parents worked for the Anglican Mission on the island. She was one of the first students to attend Malapoa College, where she studied from 1966-70, coerced into leaving the school early to marry. She worked for the Vanuatu government for twenty years, before and after independence. In 2003 she graduated from Revans University with a BA in Management.
