Mal McGillivray
Malcolm Donald McGillivray (28 August 1929 – 7 November 1984) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He won a reserves premiership in his only season with Essendon. McGillivray the played for Echuca for three years before returning to his original club, Gunbower, as captain-coach in 1954. He won a premiership in his first season back with Gunbower and played with them until retiring in 1963. Echuca ( ) is a town on the banks of the Murray River and Campaspe River in Victoria, Australia. The border town of Moama is adjacent on the northern side of the Murray River in New South Wales. Echuca is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Shire of Campaspe. As of the , Echuca had a population of 15,056, and the population of the combined Echuca and Moama townships was 22,568. Echuca lies within traditional Yorta Yorta country. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale, Victoria, Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. The Echuca Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Murray Bombers'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the Victorian town of Echuca, Victoria (Australia), Victoria. History The Echuca Football Club was formed in 1874, so it could play against the Rochester Football Club which was also formed in 1874 too. Echuca initially wore the blue and white colours. In 1890, Echuca won the Aitken Tropy, then 1891, Echuca East Football Club won the trophy, then in 1892, Rochester won the initial premiership and Echuca protested, which resulted in the two teams having to play a grand final match. Rochester refused to play, with Echuca travelling over to Rochester to play, but with no competing team, Echuca claimed the premiership match, after the first bounce.
