Maksim Chigaev
Maksim Chigaev (born 7 November 1996) is a Russian chess player who currently represents Spain. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 2016. Together with 43 other Russian chess players, Chigaev signed an open letter to Russian president Vladimir Putin, protesting against the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and expressing solidarity with the Ukrainian people. In August 2023, he changed federations to Spain. Career Chigaev was born in Kemerovo. He played on the Russian team that won the World Youth Under 16 Chess Olympiad in 2012. Chigaev also won an individual gold medal as the best player on the second board. In 2015 he won the Vanya Somov Memorial - World's Youth Stars tournament in Kirishi. In 2018, he played on team Molodezhka of Tyumen which took the bronze medal in both the Russian Team Championships Premier League and the European Club Cup. The Russian Chess Championship has taken various forms. Winners by year (men) Imperial Russia In 1874, Emanuel Schiffers defeated Andrey Chardin in a match held in St. Petersburg with five wins and four losses. Schiffers was considered the first Russian champion until his student, Mikhail Chigorin, defeated him in a match held in St. Petersburg in 1879. Parham Maghsoodloo ( fa, پرهام مقصودلو, born 11 August 2000) is an Iranian chess grandmaster. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2016. The Chess World Cup 2019 was a 128-player single-elimination chess tournament that took place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, from 9 September to 4 October 2019. It was won by Azerbaijani grandmaster Teimour Radjabov. He and the runner-up, Ding Liren, both qualified for the Candidates Tournament for the World Chess Championship 2020. It was the 8th edition of the Chess World Cup. Levon Aronian, the winner of the Chess World Cup 2017, advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave on tiebreaks. Tata Steel Chess Tournament
The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is an annual chess tournament held in January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. It was called the Hoogovens Tournament from its creation in 1938 until the sponsor Koninklijke Hoogovens merged with British Steel to form the Corus Group in 1999, after which the tournament was called the Corus Chess Tournament. Corus Group became Tata Steel Europe in 2007. Despite the name changes, the series is numbered sequentially from its Hoogovens beginnings; for example, the 2011 event was referred to as the 73rd Tata Steel Chess Tournament.
