Makiko Hara (curator)
Makiko Hara (born 1967) is an independent curator working in Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada. Career Hara worked as an independent curator based in Tokyo and Montreal throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. During that time she was a co-founder of the collective Tokyo Art Speak, a collective that focused on art discourse. Since the late 90s Hara has curated numerous notable contemporary art exhibitions and projects throughout the Asia Pacific Rim. She moved to Vancouver in 2007 when she was appointed the Chief Curator of Centre A, International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art. She was Chief Curator at Centre A until 2013 during which time she curated exhibitions with major contemporary artists from Vancouver and across the world, including: Kyohei Sakaguchi, Shen Yuan, Cathy Busby and Garry Neill Kennedy, and Lani Maestro. Kyohei Sakaguchi
is a Japanese artist and architect who was born in Kumamoto. He graduated from Waseda University's department of architecture in 2001. He is most known for his Zero Yen Project, which involves studying structures built at no cost, such as shanties made by the homeless. The Zero Yen Project involved building dwellings after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant meltdowns following the March 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated the Tohuku region. In response to the disaster he created a suicide help line using his personal cell phone. Later he studied provisional dwellings made from scrap wood, discarded cardboard boxes and other scavenged materials. In 2004 is photographic book ''Zero Yen House'' was published. Shen Yuan
Shen Yuan (; born 1959 in Xianyou, Fujian), is a Chinese-born French artist. She graduated from China Academy of Art in 1982, and then started to practice in the Xiamen Dada group, an artists group that is known for exploring radical avant-garde art in Southern China. She moved to Paris, France with her husband Huang Yong Ping after the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. As a contemporary artist, Shen Yuan's art often reflects on Chinese cultural and political realities. She has strong messages of feminism and gender roles in her artworks. Topics include issues such as labor (child labor, women workers), slums, and social conflicts. Her artistic process often makes use of on-the-spot investigations and local creative methods to work together with local children or people to complete the work. Cathy Busby
Cathy Busby is Canadian artist based in Vancouver, BC. Born in Toronto, Ontario, on April 20, 1958, Busby is an artist who has a long-time interest in posters and printed matter and their potential for grassroots communication. She worked as an artist-activist in the 80's and has been exhibiting her work internationally over the past 20 years. She has a PhD in Communication (Concordia University, Montreal, 1999) and was a Fulbright Scholar at New York University (1995–96). Background Education Busby completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1984) from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Garry Neill Kennedy
Garry Neill Kennedy, (6 November 1935 – 8 August 2021) was a Canadian conceptual artist and educator from Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the mid-1970s, he created works that investigated the processes and materials of painting. In the first decade of the 2000s, he expanded his work to investigate art and its social, institutional, and political framework. Life Kennedy was born in St. Catharines, Ontario. He studied at the OCAD, Ontario College of Art (1960) and then earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, University at Buffalo. He completed his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Ohio in 1965. Kennedy went on to teach in, and head, the fine art department of Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. Lani Maestro
Lani Maestro (born 1957) is a Filipino-Canadian artist who divides her time between France and Canada. She works in installation, sound, video, bookworks and writing. From 1990-94 Maestro was co-founder/co-publisher and designer of HARBOUR Magazine of Art and Everyday Life, a journal of artworks and writings by artists, writers and theorists based in Montreal. Early life and education Maestro was born in Manila and studied at the University of the Philippines where she received a BFA. She pursued an MFA at NSCAD University in Halifax. Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries
Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries (장영혜중공업) is a Seoul-based Web art group consisting of Young-hae Chang and Marc Voge. The group formed in 1999. Young-Hae Chang, is a Korean artist and translator with a Ph.D in aesthetics from Universite de Paris I. Marc Voge is an American poet who lives in Seoul. Their work, presented in 20 languages, is characterized by text-based animation composed in Adobe Flash that is highly synchronized to a musical score that is often original and typically jazz. In 2000, YHCHI's work was recognized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for its contribution to online art. Skeena Reece
Skeena Reece (born 1974) is a Canadian First Nations artist whose multi-disciplinary practice includes such genres as performance art, "sacred clowning," songwriting, and video art. Reece is of Cree, Tsimshian, Gitksan, and Métis descent. Background Skeena Reece was born in 1974 to Red Power movement activist Cleo Reece and internationally renowned carver Victor Reece. Oswaldo Maciá
Oswaldo Maciá (born 14 September 1960) is a sculptor. Born in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, he is based in London and New Mexico, USA. Maciá works primarily with sound and smell. In his work he endeavours 'to extend the meaning of sculpture' beyond aocularcentricunderstanding of the arts. Jason De Haan
Jason de Haan is a Canadian artist (born ). Background De Haan was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2006. In 2015, de Haan received an MFA from Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College in New York state. Vancouver Art Gallery
The Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) is an art museum in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The museum occupies a adjacent to Robson Square in downtown Vancouver, making it the largest art museum in Western Canada by building size. Designed by Francis Rattenbury, the building the museum presently occupies was originally opened as a provincial courthouse, before it was re-purposed for museum use in the early 1980s. The building was designated as the Former Vancouver Law Courts National Historic Site of Canada in 1980. The museum was opened to the public in 1931 in a building designed by architectural firm Sharp and Johnston. Cindy Mochizuki (born 1976) is a multimedia Japanese Canadian artist based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Through her drawings, installations, performance, and video works created through community-engaged and location-specific research projects, Mochizuki explores how historical and family memories are passed down in the form of narratives, folktales, rituals and archives.
