Murder Of Kerrick Majors
On April 26, 1987, Kerrick Majors, a 14-year-old African-American boy, was tortured and murdered by three white drifters during a racially motivated hate crime in East Nashville, Tennessee. Majors was attacked by the trio after he and his friends accidentally broke a $2 vase at a flea market. Majors was kidnapped, tortured, beaten, and stabbed to death, while his attackers yelled racial slurs at him. His body was found the following day. Donald Ray Middlebrooks, Tammy Middlebrooks, and Robert Brewington, all white, were convicted of his murder. Donald Middlebrooks, considered the ringleader, was sentenced to death, while Tammy Middlebrooks and Brewington received life sentences. The police were criticized for their handling of the case and were accused of being racially biased. William James Major
William James Major (November 10, 1881—August 13, 1953) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1927 to 1941, and was a prominent cabinet minister in the government of John Bracken. Major was born in Yeovil, Somerset, England, worked in the law office of Athelstan Rendall and migrated to Canada in 1901. He was educated in Manitoba, was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1913, and worked as a barrister-at-law. He also became active as a freemason. Major was chosen as a star candidate of the governing Progressive Party in the 1927 provincial election. In this period of Canadian history, newly appointed cabinet ministers were required to resign their seats and seek the renewed support of their electorate. Thomas Major (1720 – 30 December 1799) was an English engraver. His early career was in Paris. In England, he became engraver to Frederick, Prince of Wales. He was the first engraver recognized by the Royal Academy of Arts, and was chief seal engraver to the king. In Paris Major studied drawing and etching under Hubert Gravelot. In 1745 he moved to Paris, where he associated with the English engravers Andrew Lawrence (engraver), Andrew Lawrence and John Ingram (engraver), John Ingram, and was a pupil of Jacques-Philippe Le Bas and Charles-Nicolas Cochin. In October 1746 he was imprisoned in the Bastille with other Englishmen as a reprisal for the imprisonment of French and Irish soldiers after the Battle of Culloden. Shirley Inman Majors (May 7, 1913 – April 5, 1981) was an American football and baseball coach. He served as the head football coach at Huntland High School in Franklin County, Tennessee from 1949 to 1956 and at Sewanee: The University of the South from 1957 to 1977. At Sewanee, he compiled a record of 93–74–5. His total of 93 wins is the most of any head coach in the history of the Sewanee Tigers football program. Majors was the patriarch of a football family. His sons included two All-Americans in football at the University of Tennessee, Bobby and Johnny, Bill, who was an assistant at Tennessee until his death in an auto accident in 1965, Larry, who played for Sewanee at wingback, and Joe, who played at Florida State University and with the Houston Oilers of the National Football League. Mark Major (born March 20, 1970) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger. He played two games in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings during the 1996–97 season. He was drafted 25th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. Major acquired many penalty minutes over his career due to his playing style, which involved battling in front of the net for loose pucks, scoring garbage goals, and blocking the goaltenders view. Major only played in two NHL games, for the Detroit Red Wings. He also enjoyed a short career as a professional roller hockey player in Roller Hockey International (RHI). Léo Major
Léo Major (January 23, 1921 – October 12, 2008) was a Canadians, Canadian soldier who was the only Canadian and one of only three soldiers in the British Commonwealth to receive the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) twice in separate wars. Major earned his first DCM in World War II in 1945 after a successful reconnaissance mission in Zwolle. As he was sent to scout the city with one of his best friends, a firefight broke out in which his friend was killed. Major continued on to find that the city was mostly deserted by the German occupational army. Thanks to his efforts, Zwolle was spared from the artillery fire that was planned the next day by the Allies. He received his second DCM during the Korean War for leading the capture of a key hill in 1951. Today, he is sometimes called by the nickname, "the Québécois Rambo".
