Maire MacDonagh
Maire MacDonagh (20 March 1918 – 3 June 1997) was an Irish trade union official, who served as general secretary of the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland for 25 years. Early life and education Maire MacDonagh was born in Kilconnell, County Galway on 20 March 1918. She was the second of three surviving daughters of Michael MacDonagh, customs official, and Caroline (née Keary). She attended primary school locally, before going to Taylor's Hill Convent, Galway, and Sion Hill Convent, Blackrock, Dublin. In 1936 she entered University College Galway (UCG), graduating in 1939 with a first class BA in French and Irish and a B.Comm. In 1941 she received a first class MA in Old Irish and a higher diploma in education, again from UCG. She worked for a time for an insurance company in Dublin, and then taught at Sion Hill Convent, Blackrock for a few years. Letterkenny ( ga, Leitir Ceanainn , meaning 'hillside of the O'Cannons'), nicknamed 'the Cathedral Town', is the largest and most populous town in County Donegal, a county in Ulster, the northern province in Ireland. Ruaidhri Roberts (1 January 1917 – February 1986) was an Irish trade union leader. Born in Dublin, Roberts attended Belvedere College and University College Dublin before joining the accounts department of Bord na Móna. In 1945, he was appointed as general secretary of the Irish Trades Union Congress (ITUC), which had just suffered a major split with the Congress of Irish Unions leaving. Donal Nevin
Donal Nevin (20 January 1924 – 16 December 2012) was an Irish trade unionist. Born in Limerick, Nevin was educated at a Christian Brothers school before joining the civil service. His next job, from 1949, was as research officer of the Irish Trades Union Congress. In 1959, this merged with the rival Congress of Irish Unions to form the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), and Nevin continued as its research officer until 1966, when he was promoted to become Assistant General Secretary. Irish Trades Union Congress
The Irish Trades Union Congress (ITUC) was a union federation covering the island of Ireland. History Until 1894, representatives of Irish trade unions attended the British Trades Union Congress (TUC). However, many felt that they had little impact on the British body, and the Dublin Trades Council had twice tried and failed to form an Irish federation of trade unions. Its third attempt, the Irish Trades Union Congress, met for the first time in April 1894. Although some Irish delegates continued to attend the British TUC, their decision to bar representatives of trades councils from 1895 increased dissatisfaction, and the ITUC soon became the leading Irish union federation.
