Maipo Department
Maipo Department is a former department of Chile. Its capital was the commune of Buin. History The department was created by president Domingo Santa María on 10 December 1883, with territory of the Rancagua Department. Simultaneously, the O'Higgins Province was created on such day. Beginning 1 February 1928, as the DFL 8582 entered into force, the department was incorporated into Santiago Province. Its territory was also modified, excluding El Monte, third district of the Valdivia de Paine subdelegation.Decreto con Fuerza de Ley 8.582, 30 December 1927, by president Carlos Ibáñez del Campo In 1934, despite the restoration of O'Higgins Province, Maipo Department remained in Santiago Province. Buin, Chile
Buin is a city and commune of Chile, in the Maipo Province, Metropolitan Region of Santiago, which forms part of Greater Santiago. It is a city composed of the towns of Maipo, Viluco, Linderos, Valdivia de Paine, Alto Jahuel, Los Guindos and El Recurso. Buin is located about south of Santiago in the Maipo Valley wine region. Demographics According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Buin spans an area of and has 63,419 inhabitants (31,440 men and 31,979 women). Of these, 53,506 (84.4%) lived in urban areas and 9,913 (15.6%) in rural areas. The population grew by 20.1% (10,627 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses. Administration As a commune, Buin is a third-level administrative division of Chile administered by a municipal council, headed by an alcalde who is directly elected every four years. Domingo Santa María
Domingo Santa María González (; August 4, 1825 – July 18, 1889) was a Chilean political figure. He served as the president of Chile between 1881 and 1886. Early life He was born in Santiago de Chile, the son of Luis José Santa María González and Ana Josefa González Morandé. He completed his early studies in the ''Instituto Nacional'', and graduated as a lawyer from the ''Universidad de Chile'' in 1847. Soon after, he became a clerk at the Justice Ministry, where he rose to become Official Mayor. At the same time, he became the secretary of the Sociedad del Orden (Society for Public Order), a liberal club opposed to the conservative party. Political career At the age of 23, he became Intendant of Colchagua. His active intervention in rigging elections in favor of the conservatives made him into the principal target of the opposition. Rancagua Department
Rancagua () is a city and commune in central Chile and part of the Rancagua conurbation. It is the capital of the Cachapoal Province and of the O'Higgins Region, located south of the national capital of Santiago. It was originally named Santa Cruz de Triana by Spanish colonists. In 2012, its population was 232,211. The main economic activities range from mining, tourism, agriculture, timber, food production and services to minor industrial activities. The city also serves as the administrative and legal center of the region. Together with Machalí and Gultro, it forms the Rancagua conurbation. After Curicó, Talca and Concepción, it is one of the most important and densely populated cities of the south central zone of Chile. Valdivia (; Mapuche: Ainil) is a city and commune in southern Chile, administered by the Municipality of Valdivia. The city is named after its founder Pedro de Valdivia and is located at the confluence of the Calle-Calle, Valdivia, and Cau-Cau Rivers, approximately east of the coastal towns of Corral and Niebla.
