Maine Gubernatorial Election, 1994
The 1994 Maine gubernatorial election took place on November 8, 1994. Independent candidate Angus King defeated Democratic Party candidate Joseph Brennan, a former Governor of Maine, Republican Party challenger Susan Collins, a regional coordinator of the Small Business Administration, and environmentalist Jonathan Carter. Ed Finks, as a write-in candidate, took in 1.29% of the vote. Incidentally, both King and Collins now serve together in the United States Senate since 2013. Democratic primary Candidates * Joseph E. United States Senate
The United States Senate is the upper chamber of the United States Congress, with the House of Representatives being the lower chamber. Together they compose the national bicameral legislature of the United States. The composition and powers of the Senate are established by Article One of the United States Constitution. The Senate is composed of senators, each of whom represents a single state in its entirety. Charles 'Charlie' M. Webster is an American politician from Maine. Webster, a Republican from Farmington, served 14 years in the Maine Legislature, including four in the Maine House of Representatives (1980–1984) and ten in the Maine Senate (1984–1994). In the Senate, Webster served one term (1986–1988) as Assistant Minority Leader and two terms (1988–1992) as Minority Leader. In 1994, Webster sought the Republican nomination for Governor. Mary Adams (activist)
Mary G. Adams (born 1938) is an American tax activist from Maine. Adams successfully led the effort to repeal Maine's statewide property tax in the mid-1970s. She led a failed 2006 referendum effort to enact a Taxpayer Bill of Rights in the state. In the mid-1970s, Adams challenged Maine's educational establishment and through her grass roots "Freedom Fighters" successfully repealed Maine's statewide property tax and prevented the state from reducing local control of public schools in Maine. In 1994, Adams unsuccessfully ran for Governor of Maine. She sought the Maine Republican Party's nomination, finishing in 6th of 8 places. Susan Collins won the nomination. Robert Woodbury (1938 - September 12, 2009) was an American politician and university administrator. Woodbury was the Chancellor of the University of Maine system from 1986 to 1993. In 1994, Woodbury ran in the Democratic Party's primary for Governor, losing to former Governor Joe Brennan. Woodbury finished in fourth place with 8%. After earning his Ph.D., Woodbury worked as professor at the California Institute of Technology.
