Main Street Historic District (Whitehall, New York)
Main Street Historic District is a national historic district located at Whitehall in Washington County, New York. It includes 40 contributing buildings. It encompasses a three-block-long row of two- and three- story brick and stone commercial structures facing the Champlain Canal. The structures were built between 1865 and 1900, after the fire of 1864. Most were designed by local architect Almon Chandler Hopson, who also designed the Judge Joseph Potter House. Whitehall (village), New York
Whitehall is a village located in the town of Whitehall in Washington County, New York, United States. It is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village population was 2,614 in 2010. The village of Whitehall is located just south of the point where the Vermont border connects to the southern end of Lake Champlain. History The village was founded in 1759 as "Skenesborough" by Major Philip Skene, who built the barracks at Crown Point under Gen. Jeffrey Amherst. He sold out his commission in the British army to establish the community and the many associated enterprises he planned and later carried out. It was the first settlement at Lake Champlain and became an important trade center. It was on one of two routes between English and French colonies. Champlain Canal
The Champlain Canal is a canal in New York that connects the Hudson River to the south end of Lake Champlain. It was simultaneously constructed with the Erie Canal for use by commercial vessels, fully opening in 1823. Today, it is mostly used by recreational boaters as part of the New York State Canal System and Lakes to Locks Passage. History An early proposal made in the 1790s by Marc Isambard Brunel for a Hudson River–Lake Champlain canal was not approved. Another proposal for the canal was made in 1812 and construction authorized in 1817. By 1818, were completed, and in 1819 the canal was opened from Fort Edward to Lake Champlain.
