John Main
John Douglas Main OSB (21 January 1926 – 30 December 1982) was a Roman Catholic priest and Benedictine monk who presented a way of Christian meditation which used a prayer-phrase or mantra. In 1975, Main began Christian meditation groups which met at Ealing Abbey, his monastery in West London, England, and, later, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. These were the origins of the ecumenical network of Christian meditation groups which have become the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM). Willett Main
Willett S. Main (August 15, 1828 – July 5, 1902) was an American politician. Born in Edmeston, New York, Main moved with his family to Clarksville, New York, then to Waukesha County, Wisconsin Territory in 1846, and then to Madison, Wisconsin Territory in 1847. He was a farmer and merchant. He served as sheriff and under-sheriff of Dane County, Wisconsin and was a deputy United States Marshal. He served in the Wisconsin State Senate, as a Republican, from 1888 to 1892. He died of heart disease near Madison, Wisconsin. His brother was Alexander H. Alexander "Sandy" Main (born 1873) was a Scottish professional footballer and middle-distance runner. Born in West Calder, West Lothian, Main started his career with his hometown club. He later played for fellow Scottish sides Rangers, Hibernian and Motherwell Motherwell ( sco, Mitherwall, gd, Tobar na Màthar) is a town and former burgh in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, south east of Glasgow. Robert Main
The Reverend Robert Main (12 July 1808 – 9 May 1878) was an English astronomer. Life Born at Upnor in Kent, he was the eldest son of Thomas Main; Thomas John Main the mathematician was a younger brother. Robert Main attended school in Portsea, Portsmouth before studying mathematics at Queens' College, Cambridge, where he graduated as sixth wrangler in 1834. He served for twenty-five years (1835–60) as First Assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, and published numerous articles, particularly on stellar and planetary motion, stellar parallax, and the dimensions and shapes of the planets. From 1841 to 1861 he was successively an honorary secretary, a vice-president, and President of the Royal Astronomical Society, and in 1858 was awarded the Society's Gold Medal. The Pigeon Detectives are an English indie rock band from Rothwell in Leeds, West Yorkshire, who formed in 2004. The band have released five albums from 2007 to present. They performed at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2006, where they were tagged "the band most likely to leap to the main stage in 2007" in an ''NME'' review. Alan David Main (born 5 December 1967) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He is currently goalkeeping coach at Dunfermline Athletic. Main began his senior football career in the Highland League, for whom he made his debut as a 15-year-old for his hometown team, Lossiemouth, transferring to Elgin City during the 1986–87 season. Main then transferred to top-tier Dundee United, signing a full-time contract, and remained with the club for nine years. He also played for St Johnstone, Livingston and Gretna in a twenty-year full-time professional career.
