Maija Salmiovirta
Maija Salmiovirta (born January 11, 1982 in Helsinki) is a Finnish curler. She currently plays second for Oona Kauste. Salmiovirta started curling in 2008 and immediately joined the Bettina Mandelin team at lead, finishing 7th in the 2009 Finnish Women's Curling Championship, the next year they would finish fifth. In 2010, she joined the Ellen Vogt rink as her lead, winning a silver medal at the 2011 Finnish championship. The team would play in three World Curling Tour events that season as well. With Vogt, Salmiovirta won bronze medal at the 2012 Finnish championship and a silver in 2013. Salmiovirta would play as the alternate for the Finnish national team, skipped by Sanna Puustinen at the 2013 European Curling Championships. Salmiovirta would play in one game and the team finished in 11th. Playing lead for Team Puustinen, Salmiovirta won a gold medal at the 2014 Finnish Championship. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends. The player can induce a curved path, described as ''curl'', by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides. World Curling Tour
The World Curling Tour (WCT) is a group of curling bonspiels featuring the best male, female, and mixed doubles curlers in the world. History The World Curling Tour was founded by former World Champion Ed Lukowich, with later assistance from John Kawaja. The World Curling Tour commenced in 1992, with men's events only at first. It replaced the "Canadian Curling Tour" held the previous season. The first season consisted of 48 events (with only one outside Canada), and was sponsored by Seagram's distillery. Teams earned points in every event with the top 30 qualifying for the season ending " V.O. Cup", today known as the Players' Championship. Its first president and CEO was Lukowich. 2016 Ford World Women's Curling Championship
The 2016 World Women's Curling Championship (branded as the 2016 Ford World Women's Curling Championship presented by Meridian for sponsorship reasons) was held from March 19 to 27 at the Credit Union iPlex in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Team Switzerland won the championship 9–6 over Team Japan. The playoffs made history for Team Japan, which had never made the final before. Switzerland's win makes this their country's 6th Women's World Championship gold medal, 3rd gold medal in a row, and 4th gold medal in the last 5 years. 2014 European Curling Championships
The 2014 European Curling Championships were held November 22 to 29 at the Palladium de Champéry in Champéry, Switzerland. Switzerland last hosted the European Curling Championships in 2010, when it was also held in Champéry. The Group C competitions was held in October at the PWA Silverdome in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands. At the conclusion of the championships, the top eight women's teams will go to the 2015 World Women's Curling Championship in Sapporo, and the top eight men's teams will go to the 2015 Ford World Men's Curling Championship in Halifax. This edition of the European Curling Championships marks the first appearance of Israel at an international curling event. The 2013 European Curling Championships were held from November 22 to 30 at the Sørmarka Arena in Stavanger, Norway. Norway last hosted the European Curling Championships in 1990. The Group C competitions were held in October at the Tårnby Curling Club in Tårnby, Denmark. Sanna Puustinen
Sanna Puustinen (born 24 March 1988; in marriage also known as Sanna Piilo) is a Finnish curler. Puustinen grew up in Hyvinkää but lives in Helsinki. Puustinen has represented Finland in four European Curling Championships. She was an alternate at her first European Championships in 2005. She didn't play in any games, and the team placed 10th. She played in 2011 European Curling Championships as fourth player with Heidi Hossi, and Eszter Juhász team skipped by Oona Kauste, and placed 12th (8-1 in the B Division). The team returned to the Euros at the 2013 European Curling Championships, with new lead Marjo Hipp. The team finished in 11th place, winning the B Division, and promoting Finland to the A Division of the 2014 European Curling Championships. European Curling Championships
The European Curling Championships are annual curling tournaments held in Europe between various European nations. The European Curling Championships are usually held in early to mid December. The tournament also acts as a qualifier for the World Championships, where the top eight nations qualify. In November 1974, a six-nations tournament was held in Zürich, Switzerland which included Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, and Norway. In March 1975, it was decided that the championships would be competed in December. At the semi-annual general meeting in Gävle, Sweden in April 2004, a new competition called the European Mixed Curling Championships was formed.
