Maialen Lujanbio
Maialen Lujanbio (born 26 November 1976) is a Basque poet and bertsolari winner. She composes her oral poetry in the Basque language and she is the only woman to ever reach her level. Life Lujanbio was born in Hernani in 1976. She took an interest in the Basque oral tradition of poetry whilst at secondary school. She attended specialist classes and continued to practise whilst at the University of the Basque Country. She won prizes at the junior and then senior level introducing novel approaches to the poetry discipline. In 1994 she became the Champion of Gipuzkoa. In 2003 she wrote for the Basque newspaper, Berria, completing a column each day. Hernani, Gipuzkoa
Hernani is a town and municipality located in the province of Gipuzkoa, Basque Autonomous Community, Spain. The town sits on the left bank of the Urumea river. It is located at a distance of 9.2 km from San Sebastián. The municipality of Hernani occupies an area of approximately 40 square kilometres and is bordered by San Sebastián, Astigarraga, Arano, Elduayen, Errenteria, Lasarte-Oria and Urnieta. From the town centre, at the foot of Mount Santa Barbara, it is possible to see a large area of the valley of Urumea. Its festivities, held between 23 and 27 June in honour of John the Baptist; and between his celebrations the popular "azeri dantza" (also celebrated in celebrations of Carnival) should be emphasized. Bertsolari
Bertsolaritza or bertsolarism is the art of singing extemporaneously composed songs in Basque according to various melodies and rhyming patterns. Bertsos can be composed at a variety of occasions but are performed generally by one or various ''bertsolaris'' onstage in an event arranged for the purpose or as a sideshow, in homage ceremonies, in benefit lunches and suppers, with friends or at a competition. Such a sung piece of composition is called a ''bertso'', the person who sings it is called a ''bertsolari'' and the art of composing bertsos is called ''bertsolaritza'' in Basque. Traditionally these were sung by men but there is an increasing number of young female bertsolaris today. Gipuzkoa (, , ; es, Guipúzcoa ; french: Guipuscoa) is a province of Spain and a historical territory of the autonomous community of the Basque Country. Its capital city is Donostia-San Sebastián. ''Berria'' (Basque language, Basque: ''News'') is the only daily newspaper published wholly in the Basque language and which can be read in the entirety of the Basque Country (historical territory), Basque country. It was created after the closure of the previous Basque language newspaper, Egunkaria, by the Spain, Spanish government, after being accused of having ties with ETA (separatist group), ETA. The newspaper shutdown was regarded by many as an attack on freedom of speech and the Basque language. After 7 years, in April 2010, the editorial team were found not guilty and acquitted. Mondragon University ( eu, Mondragon Unibertsitatea, MU) is a non-profit cooperative private university in the Basque Country, officially established and recognised in 1997. It is part of Mondragon Corporation. Its main campus is in Mondragón, Gipuzkoa. As of February 2016, it had about 4000 students pursuing 22 bachelor's degrees, 13 master's degrees and several advanced courses.
