Maher Sabry
Maher Sabry ( ar, ماهر صبري; born 11 April 1967) is an Egyptian theater director, playwright, film director, producer and screenwriter, poet, writer and cartoonist. Biography A gay activist, he was the first director to portray gay and lesbian love in lyrical and sympathetic manner on Egyptian stage. He also directed the first all-gay award-winning Egyptian film ''All My Life (2008 film), All My Life'' (in Arabic language, Arabic طول عمري, transliteration Toul Oumry). He also published poetry in various Arabic language publications and ''Marionette'' is his first poetry collection, published by Garad Books in Cairo in 1998. ''All My Life'' ( arz, طول عمري; translit. ''Toul Omry''; french: Toute ma vie), is a 2008 Egyptian film by Maher Sabry. It is noted as being the first film to handle the subject of male homosexuality and the status of homosexuals in Egypt. While a work of fiction, Sabry made efforts to use real-life influences from his own experiences to the 2001 arrests of the Cairo 52 to keep the portrayal of conditions for homosexuals in Egypt accurate. Cairo 52
The Cairo 52 were men arrested on May 11, 2001, aboard a floating gay nightclub called the Queen Boat, which was moored on the Nile in Cairo, Egypt. Charges Of fifty-two men arrested, fifty were charged with "habitual practice of debauchery" and "obscene behaviour" under Article 9c of Law No. 10 of 1961 on the Combating of Prostitution. Another two were charged with "contempt of religion" under Article 98f of the Penal Code. All fifty-two men pleaded innocent. Treatment of Arrest According to the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC), the men were subjected to beatings and forensic examinations to "prove their homosexuality". All 52 men were kept for twenty-two hours a day in two cramped cells with no beds. Trials The trials of the Cairo 52 lasted five months. John Scagliotti
John Scagliotti is an American film director and producer, and radio broadcaster. He has received honors for his work on documentaries about LGBT issues including ''Before Stonewall'' and ''After Stonewall''. Biography During the 1970s, Scagliotti was the News and Public Affairs Director of WBCN/104.1 in Boston. For his work in radio, he was awarded two Major Armstrong Awards. In the early 1980s, Scagliotti attended New York University Film School. He created ''In the Life'' for PBS. This was the United States' first gay and lesbian national series. The Scagliotti-produced 1985 documentary film ''Before Stonewall'' won the Audience Award at L.A. Outfest and two Emmy Awards. Scagliotti directed a companion piece, ''After Stonewall''.
