Mahendra Singh (soldier)
Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Mahendra Singh, KC, SM is a decorated Indian Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of 9 Para SF. During an operation, he was paralysed on one side of his body. Military career On October 21, 1990, Mahendra Singh of Jhunjhunu's Dumra village joined the Special Forces 9th Battalion The Parachute Regiment. Subedar Singh's career expanded over twenty years in the Indian Army. He participated in number of encounters with the hardcore terrorists in many operations. On the night of September 2, 2015, the operative team of the 6 RR Battalion was scouring the Kupwara jungles for four terrorists. The terrorists started shooting. This resulted in the deaths of two terrorists. Many bullets pierced Subedar Major Mahendra Singh's intestine and spine during this time. Subedar Major
Subedar Major is the senior-most rank of junior commissioned officer in the Indian and Pakistani Armies, formerly known as the Viceroy's commissioned officer in the British Indian Army. History During the British Raj, Subedar-Major was the highest rank natives could achieve. On 28 October 1817, the position was introduced by the East India Company (EIC) in the Native infantry of the Bengal Army, one of the three EIC's Presidency armies. The Madras Army adopted this rank on 2 February 1819. In 1825, the Bengal native cavalry established the equivalent rank of Risaldar-Major, which was soon adopted by the Presidency armies of Bombay and Madras. Both ranks would serve as a representative of their people to British officers, but could also command independent companies resp. troops of irregular regiments. Ashoka Chakra (military Decoration)
The Ashoka Chakra (alternative spelling: Ashok Chakra) is India's highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valor, courageous action, or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. It is the peacetime equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra (PVC) and is awarded for the "most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice" other than in the face of the enemy. The decoration may be awarded either to military or civilian personnel. Naik Narbahadur Thapa, Havildar Bachittar Singh and Flight Lieutenant Suhas Biswas were the first recipients of the Ashoka Chakra. Mohan Nath Goswami
Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami AC was a soldier in the 9 Para (SF) of the Parachute Regiment of the Indian Army. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration. On 3 September 2015, while serving with the 9th battalion of the Parachute Regiment, Goswami was killed in an ambush operation while fighting four terrorists in Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir. For his actions in Kupwara, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra. Early life Goswami a Kumaoni was born in Indira Nagar-I village in Lalkuan, Nainital, Uttarakhand, India. He had one daughter, Bhumika Goswami, with his wife Bhawna. His father had also served in the Army.
