The Maharashtra football team is an Indian football team representing Maharashtra in Indian state football competitions including the Santosh Trophy. They have appeared in the Santosh Trophy finals 15 times, and have won the trophy 4 times. Prior to 1962, the team competed as Bombay football team. Western India Football Association (WIFA) is the state governing body for football in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is affiliated with the All India Football Federation, the sports national governing body. History The Bombay Football Association was established in the Bombay province of 1902. It was amalgamated with the older Rovers Football Cup Committee to form the Western India Football Association on 12 July 1911. Justice Russel became president of the WIFA while P. R. Cadell became vice-president, and the objective of was to improve the sport of football in the Bombay state, and in the present-day Maharashtra. Before that, football games were organised for the Rovers Cup, which is India's second oldest football tournament started in 1890. Steven Dias
Steven Benedic Dias (born 25 December 1983) is an Indian former professional footballer and current coach of MFA Elite Division outfit Ambernath United Atlanta FC. An attacking midfielder who played on the wings, he was known for his long range shooting, crossing and passing. Dias made his debut for India in 2006 and had since become a mainstay in the Indian midfield. He is known as the "David Beckham of India". Club career Dias was playing for one of India's leading clubs Mahindra United (before the club withdrew from Indian football on 30 April 2010) and played in their NFL winning team, as well as in the AFC Cup. Santosh Trophy
The Santosh Trophy, officially known as Hero Senior Men's National Football Championship due to sponsorship ties with Hero MotoCorp, is a state-level football competition contested by the state associations and government institutions under the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the sport's governing body in India. Before the starting of the first national club league, the National Football League in 1996, the Santosh Trophy was considered the top domestic honour in India. Many players who have represented India internationally, played and gained honour while playing in the Santosh Trophy. The tournament is held every year with 37 teams, who are divided into five zones, must play in the qualifying round and progress into the tournament proper. 2022–23 Santosh Trophy
The 2022–23 Santosh Trophy is the 76th edition of the Santosh Trophy, the premier competition in India for senior men's football teams representing their respective states/union territories and government institutions. Contrary to the recent seasons, this edition onwards, the AIFF adopted a new format for the tournament that saw the removal of the qualification stage, thereby allowing all the state teams to participate in the group stage. This move taken in a way for promoting the sport in every region of the country. On 6 October 2022, the AIFF signed a MoU with the SAFF, which included an agreement to host the semi-finals, the 3rd place decider & the final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The 1999–2000 Santosh Trophy was the 56th edition of the Santosh Trophy, the main State competition for football in India. It was held from 9 to 23 April 2000 in Thrissur and Chalakudy, Kerala. The 2005–06 Santosh Trophy (known as the 60th Air India Express Santosh Trophy 2005–06 for sponsorship reasons) was the 60th edition of the Santosh Trophy. The tournament was held from 4 to 21 November 2005 in Kerala. Football At The National Games Of India
Football has been a sport at the National Games of India since the 1985 edition, while the Women's football tournament was introduced in the 1999 edition. The 1985 National Games was the first modern National Games to be held since its inception in 1924 and was also the first to be held on the lines of the Olympics. Punjab and West Bengal are currently the most successful states in the Men's event with 3 Gold Medals each while Manipur is the most successful in Women's event with 5 Gold Medals.
