Mahalchari ( bn, মহালছড়ি) is an upazila of Khagrachari District in the Division of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Geography Mahalchari is located at . It has 9,556 households and total area 186.48 km2. Demographics As of the 2011 Bangladesh census, the residual Mahalchhari upazila had 9,556 households and a population of 42,427. 10,098 (23.80%) were under 10 years of age. Mahalchhari had an average literacy rate of 47.48%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 929 females per 1000 males. 10,249 (24.16%) of the population lived in urban areas. The ethnic population was 27,857 (65.66%), of which Chakma were 19,328, Marma 6,760 and Tripura 1,636. As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Mahalchari has a population of 32,609. 1991 Bangladesh Census
In 1991, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, conducted a national census in Bangladesh. They recorded data from all of the districts and upazilas and main cities in Bangladesh including statistical data on population size, households, sex and age distribution, marital status, economically active population, literacy and educational attainment, religion, number of children etc. According to the census, Hindus were 10.5 per cent of the population, down from 12.1 per cent as of 1981. Bangladesh have a population of 106,314,992 as per 1991 census report. Tripuri People
The Tripuri (also known as Tripura, Tipra, Tiprasa, Twipra) are an ethnic group originating in the Indian state of Tripura. Marma People
The Marma ( my, မရမာလူမျိုး), formerly known as Moghs or Maghs, are the second-largest ethnic community in Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts, primarily residing in the Bandarban, Khagrachari and Rangamati Hill Districts. Some Marmas live in Bangladesh's coastal districts of Cox's Bazar and Patuakhali, while others live in Tripura, India and Myanmar. There are over 210,000 Marmas living in Bangladesh. Chakma People
The Chakma people ( ccp, 𑄌𑄋𑄴𑄟𑄳𑄦; ) are a Tribe, tribal group from the eastern-most regions of the Indian subcontinent. They are the largest ethnic group in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region of southeastern Bangladesh, and the second-largest in Mizoram, India (Chakma Autonomous District Council, Chakma Autonomous District). Other places in Northeast India also have significant Chakma populations. In 2011, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, conducted a national census in Bangladesh, which provided a provisional estimate of the total population of the country as 142,319,000. The previous decennial census was the 2001 census. Data were recorded from all of the districts and upazilas and main cities in Bangladesh including statistical data on population size, households, sex and age distribution, marital status, economically active population, literacy and educational attainment, religion, number of children etc. Bangladesh and India also conducted their first joint census of areas along their border in 2011.
