Mahaica-Berbice
Mahaica-Berbice (Region 5) is a region of Guyana, bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the region of East Berbice-Corentyne to the east, the region of Upper Demerara-Berbice to the south and the region of Demerara-Mahaica to the west. It contains the villages of Rosignol, Fort Wellington, and Mahaicony. The Mahaica River runs along the region's western border. The Berbice River is the eastern border. The Mahaicony and Abary Rivers run south to north. Population The Government of Guyana has administered three official censuses since the 1980 administrative reforms, in 1980, 1991 and 2002. Abary
Abary is a small community in the Mahaica-Berbice Region of Guyana, near the mouth of the Abary River, 43 miles from Georgetown. Abary is known for the Abary Bridge located on the Main Highway. The bridge was originally a railway bridge and has a very steep ascend. Moraikobai
Moraikobai is an Amerindian village located in the Mahaica-Berbice of Guyana, South America. History The community was initially called “Moracoba”; a name that was birthed from a combination of two Arawak words; ‘Mora’ meaning tree and ‘Coba’ meaning stump. However, several decades ago the name was officially changed to ‘Moraikobai’. The village is situated approximately from the confluence of the Mahaicony River, and is only accessible by the Mahaicony creek, helicopter, and trail, the latter of which can be treacherous given that it is of sand; it connects the village to Linden in Region 10 and consists of a population of just over five hundred residents, who are predominantly indigenous peoples from the Arawak tribe. Bush Lot
There are several communities named Bush Lot in Guyana. This article covers four locations. Mahaica-Berbice Bush Lot is a community in the Mahaica-Berbice Region 5 of Guyana, approximately 56 miles from Georgetown, the capital. and mostly Indo-Guyanese. Rice production is the main business. Belladrum
Belladrum is a small community in the Mahaica-Berbice Region of Guyana, on the Atlantic coast, about east of Mahaicony. Geography Belladrum is a rural area close to the sea wall on the northern coast of Guyana. It is below sea level and is rich with lush vegetation, rice fields, and wildlife. Due to frequent seasonal flooding, it is particularly good for growing rice. Housing and employment Housing is traditionally made of wood and stands on stilt-like columns. Recently houses made of concrete and breeze bloc are becoming more common. The people of Belladrum are very friendly and walk long distances in search of work. Historically the men of Belladrum would walk for miles daily to "dig shovel", digging canals and waterways in the cane fields or "cut cane" at the Bath or Blairmont sugar plantations. Mahaica River
The Mahaica River is a small river in northern Guyana that drains into the Atlantic Ocean. The village of Mahaica is found at its mouth. It is one of Guyana's principal coastal streams that also forms a rough border between the Demerara-Mahaica region and the Mahaica-Berbice region. The extent of brackish water that has made its way inland has been recorded at 12 miles. The estimated flow in cubic ft. per second is 1,700 (wet season) and 700 (dry season). The origin of the Mahaica is difficult to trace because its upper watersheds overlap with the lower watersheds of the Demerara and Berbice rivers. The river breaks off into smaller tributaries making it seem "boundless." Mahaicony
Mahaicony is a community that is made up several villages in East Coast Demerara, Mahaica-Berbice, Guyana. Mahaicony's physical boundaries on the coast is from De Hoop village in the west to Calcutta village in the east. Central Mahaicony incorporates the villages of Farm, Zeskenderen, L’Excellence and Yorkshire Hall and the main branch road leads to the communities of Perth and Wash Clothes. Economic activity Farming and cattle-rearing are the economic mainstays of the village. The area produces over 15,000 metric tons of paddy rice each year. The activities of the community are usually affected by flooding during the rainy season and the drying up of ponds during the dry season.
