Initially ordered by the Royal Navy during World War II, the Royal Canadian Navy acquired the ''Magnificent'' while waiting for another aircraft carrier to be completed to their needs and it entered service in 1948 replacing in service HMCS ''Warrior'' which had been loaned for two years by the RN. ''Magnificent'' was generally referred to as ''Maggie'' in Canadian service. In 1956, Canada received HMCS ''Bonaventure'' and ''Magnificent'' returned to the United Kingdom in 1956, where it remained in reserve until being scrapped in 1965. Reception

awarded the album 4 stars with its review by Jim Todd stating, "''Magnificent'' brilliantly illustrates Barry Harris' unique rapport with the bop piano tradition. Absolutely unlike the enervating, curatorial approach of the neo-con movement, Harris deals with the tradition as a continuum, perpetually rejuvenating and extending it".Todd, J

It did, however, reach number one on the Scottish Singles Chart, their second single from ''No Line on the Horizon'' to do so. Writing and recording "Magnificent" originated from the band's improvised recording sessions with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois in Fez, Morocco in June 2007. The track was created out of a series of chord changes in the midst of a jam. The Edge noted that "The basic chord progression had a power that go ...
