Lake Maggiore
Lake Maggiore (, ; it, Lago Maggiore ; lmo, label=Western Lombard, Lagh Maggior; pms, Lagh Magior; literally 'Greater Lake') or Verbano (; la, Lacus Verbanus) is a large lake located on the south side of the Alps. It is the second largest lake in Italy and the largest in southern Switzerland. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy and the Swiss canton of Ticino. Located halfway between Lake Orta and Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore extends for about between Locarno and Arona. The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with many gardens growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Borromean and Brissago Islands, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia Botanical Garden above Stresa. Isola Maggiore
Isola Maggiore is the second largest island (at approximately ) on Lake Trasimeno, in Umbria, central Italy. It is a '' frazione'' of the '' comune'' of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, and is the only inhabited island on the lake, with a current population of 35. History St Francis of Assisi lived 40 days on this island as a hermit during Lent (probably 1211 although the date is unsure). The 12th century Church of Saint Michael the Archangel was built on the top of the hill. The island's only town reached its height in the 14th century, after the establishment of a Franciscan Monastery in 1328. Most of the towns buildings date from this period. By the 1800s the town had a population of 700 and was in decline. The Guglielmi Castle was built in the 1880s on the site of the monastery, but has since fallen into disrepair. Fontana Maggiore
The ''Fontana Maggiore'', a masterpiece of medieval sculpture, placed in the centre of Piazza IV Novembre (formerly Piazza Grande), is the monument symbol of the city of Perugia. History The monumental fountain was designed by Frà Bevignate da Cingoli and built between 1275 and 1277 to celebrate the arrival of water in the acropolis of the city, by means of the new aqueduct. Bevignate cooperated with other talented professionals, as Boninsegna Veneziano, a hydraulic engineer, who accomplished an incredible audacious endeavour, being able to carry the water coming from monte Pacciano, located a few kilometres, without the help of pumps. By means of a forced pressure duct, he managed to give to the water the opposite movement, i.e., the water flowed uphill instead of downhill. Porta Maggiore Basilica
The Porta Maggiore Basilica is an underground basilica discovered in 1917 near Porta Maggiore in Rome. It is dated to the first century BC. It is believed to have been the meeting place of the neo-Pythagoreans, and is the only historical site that has been associated with the neo-Pythagorean movement. This school of mystical Hellenistic philosophy preached asceticism and was based on the works of Pythagoras and Plato. It was a precursor to the basilicas built during the Christian period, centuries later. It was opened to small groups of visitors in April 2015. Discovery It is below the street level. Porta Maggiore, Bologna
Porta Maggiore, now known as Porta Mazzini, was the main eastern portal of the former medieval walls of the city of Bologna, Italy. It straddles the site in which the Strada Maggiore of Bologna changes name to via Mazzini, immediately west of the intersection with the Viale di Ciconvallazione. First erected in the 13th century, in 1507, under Pope Julius II a further fortification was added. By the 17th century, porticos were built leading to the church-sanctuary of Santa Maria Lacrimosa degli Alemanni further down on Via Mazzini. In 1770, the portal was partially reconstructed by designs of Giovanni Giacomo Dotti. Portomaggiore ( Ferrarese: ) is a town and '' comune'' in the province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. History In the Battle of Portomaggiore of 1395, mercenary troops of the Ferrara Regency Council, assisted by allies from Florence, Bologna, Venice and fighting in the name of the young Niccolò III d'Este, Marquis of Ferrara beat the rebel forces of his uncle, Azzo X d'Este, pretender to the Lordship of Ferrara. Učka
The Učka ([], it, Monte Maggiore) is a mountain range in western Croatia. It rises behind the Opatija riviera, on the eastern side of the Istrian peninsula. It forms a single morphological unit together with the Ćićarija range which stretches from the Bay of Trieste to Rijeka. Christine Maggiore
Christine Joy Maggiore (July 25, 1956 – December 27, 2008) was an HIV-positive activist and promoter of HIV/AIDS denialism. She was the founder of Alive & Well AIDS Alternatives, an organization which disputes the link between HIV and AIDS and urges HIV-positive pregnant women to avoid anti-HIV medication. Maggiore authored and self-published the book ''What If Everything You Thought You Knew about AIDS Was Wrong?'' Maggiore's promotion of HIV/AIDS denialism had long been controversial, particularly since her 3-year-old daughter, Eliza Jane Scovill, died of ''Pneumocystis jirovecii'' pneumonia, which is an AIDS-defining illness. Consistent with her belief that HIV was harmless, Maggiore had not taken medication to reduce the risk of transmission of HIV to her daughter during pregnancy, and she did not have Eliza Jane tested for HIV during her daughter's lifetime. Giulio Maggiore (born 12 March 1998) is an Italian professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for club Salernitana. Hervé Della Maggiore (born 17 August 1972) is a French former footballer who played as a midfielder, and is the coach of French club FC Villefranche. Managerial career Della Maggiore was a youth product of Olympique Lyonnais, and had an unassuming career as a semi-amateur footballer. Della Maggiore begun his managerial career with Bourg-en-Bresse in 2008, when the team played in the Championnat National 3, the fifth division in French football. During his tenure, he helped Bourg-en-Bresse reach the Ligue 2, becoming the first team in the Ain ''département'' in France to do so.
