Magda Cordell McHale
Magda Cordell McHale (née Lustigova; June 24, 1921 – February 21, 2008) was a Hungarian artist, futurist, and educator. She was a founding member of the Independent Group which was a British movement that originated Pop Art which grew out of a fascination with American mass culture and post-WWII technologies. Later, she was a faculty member in the University at Buffalo School of Architecture & Planning. "I was filled with pain and I hoped for a better world," she recounted later. This expression of hope came to define her working practices for the rest of her life. “Society needs to know where it has been before it can know where it is going,” was her oft-cited mantra. Sloan, New York
Sloan is a village in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,661 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area and is in the town of Cheektowaga. History The village was incorporated in 1896 from part of Cheektowaga. With the CSX Frontier yard to the village's north and the Norfolk Southern Bison yard to the village's south, it was a historically important railroad town like nearby Depew. (These yards were originally the New York Central and Erie-Lackawanna, respectively.) For much of its history the village had a police force ranging from three to six officers. The force was abolished circa 1978, and the four patrolmen and one captain were absorbed by the Cheektowaga Police Department, which to this day provides police services to the village. World War II Refugees
Mass evacuation, forced displacement, expulsion, and deportation of millions of people took place across most countries involved in World War II. A number of these phenomena were categorised as violations of fundamental human values and norms by the Nuremberg Tribunal after the war ended. The mass movement of people – most of them refugees – had either been caused by the hostilities, or enforced by the former Axis and the Allied powers based on ideologies of race and ethnicity, culminating in the postwar border changes enacted by international settlements.
