Magallanes, Cavite
Magallanes, officially the Municipality of Magallanes ( tgl, Bayan ng Magallanes), is a 4th class municipality in the province of Cavite, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 23,851 people. The municipality is named after Ferdinand Magellan, who was known in Spanish language, Spanish as Fernando de Magallanes. History Magallanes began its history as a barrio called ''Panitan'', then a part of the municipality of Maragondon, Cavite, Maragondon. Panitan was derived from the Tagalog word ''"panit"'', meaning "to remove the bark of a tree". Long before the coming of the Spaniards, there grew along the mountainside of this barrio big trees called ''bitangcol'' which provide a source of income for the people. The barks of the trees are removed (panitan) and used as containers for storing palay or unhusked rice. The fibers of the barks were removed and twined into durable ropes. Magallanes, officially the Municipality of Magallanes ( ceb, Lungsod sa Magallanes; tgl, Bayan ng Magallanes), is a 4th class municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 22,293 people. The municipality was named after the Hispanized surname of the Portuguese-born maritime explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Formerly part of Butuan, Magallanes was created as a municipality on June 21, 1969, through ''Republic Act 5660''. Geography According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the municipality has a land area of constituting of the total area of Agusan del Norte. Punta Arenas (; historically Sandy Point in English) is the capital city of Chile's southernmost region, Magallanes and Antarctica Chilena. The city was officially renamed as Magallanes in 1927, but in 1938 it was changed back to "Punta Arenas". Magallanes, officially the Municipality of Magallanes, is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Sorsogon, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 37,411 people. Strait Of Magellan
The Strait of Magellan (), also called the Straits of Magellan, is a navigable sea route in southern Chile separating mainland South America to the north and Tierra del Fuego to the south. The strait is considered the most important natural passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It was discovered and first traversed by the Spanish expedition of Ferdinand Magellan in 1520, after whom it is named. Prior to this, the strait had been navigated by canoe-faring indigenous peoples including the Kawésqar. Magellan's original name for the strait was ''Estrecho de Todos los Santos'' ("Strait of All Saints"). The King of Spain, Emperor Charles V, who sponsored the Magellan-Elcano expedition, changed the name to the Strait of Magellan in honor of Magellan. Magallanes Station
Magallanes station is an elevated Manila Metro Rail Transit (MRT) station situated on Line 3. The station is named after the adjacent Magallanes district of Makati, which in turn is named after Ferdinand Magellan, who discovered the Philippines for Spain on April 15, 1521. Although the station is named after Magallanes, it also serves passengers from Kayamanan-C and barangays Dasmariñas, Pio del Pilar, and San Lorenzo in Makati, and those from Taguig. The station is the twelfth station for trains headed to Taft Avenue and the second station for trains headed to North Avenue. It is the last station in Makati before it crosses over to Pasay. Magallanes Province ( es, Provincia de Magallanes) is one of four Provinces of Chile, provinces in the southern Chilean Regions of Chile, region of Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena Region, Magallanes and Antártica Chilena. The provincial capital is the city of Punta Arenas. Chilean Corvette Magallanes (1873)
The corvette ''Magallanes'' was ordered by the Chilean government after the disastrous consequences of the War against Spain in 1864-1866 and the rising border conflict with the neighboring countries at the end of the 1870s. In the extreme southern region of Chile In 1874 she was ordered to travel to the Strait of Magellan to produce charts of the ''Angostura Inglesa'' in the Messier Channel, and of the Bahia Possession in the strait. In January 1876, during patrols off the extreme southern region of Chile and under the command of Juan José Latorre, the French ship ''Jeanne Amelie'' was seized off the coast of Rio Negro as they loaded guano without a Chilean license. By the attempt to bring the ship to Punta Arenas, the ''Jeanne Amelie'' sank on 27 April 1876 at the eastern entrance of the Strait of Magellan. Deportes Magallanes is a Chilean Football team based in San Bernardo, Chile. They will play in the Primera División de Chile starting from 2023 after winning the 2022 Primera B championship. The club was founded on October 27, 1897 with the name Atlético Escuela Normal F.C.. In 1933 they became the first national champions of Chile. They won a hat trick of titles in the formative years of Chilean football (1933, 1934 and 1935) but their last major title came in 1938. In 2022 they won the Primera B championship and promotion to the top tier having not competed since 1986, they also won the Copa Chile for the first time in the same year which meant they qualified for the 2022-23 Copa Libertadores.
