Rail passenger services between Traralgon and Maffra ceased in 1977 and regular freight trains ended in 1983, when through services from Orbost and Bairnsdale were routed via the parallel Traralgon–Sale–Stratford railway. The rail line between Traralgon and Maffra was closed in stages from 1987, with Maffra station continued to be served by freight trains from Stratford intermittently until 1993. Maffra Railway Line
The Maffra railway line is a closed railway line in Victoria, Australia. The line provided an alternative route to East Gippsland than the current route to Sale. The line was closed in stages from Traralgon to Cowwarr in 1986, and from Cowwarr to Maffra in 1994. In the later years of the line, the main purpose of the line was to serve dairy industries at Maffra. The last passenger service from Traralgon to Maffra was run by a 153hp Walker railmotor on 7 July 1977. A replacement bus service started 2 days later. The last freight service on the line was on 8 September 1994, being 9470 up goods to Sale with locomotive N472, a single container wagon, and rail tractor RT49. Briagolong Railway Line
The Briagolong railway line is a closed railway line in Victoria, Australia, which ran from to . It opened in 1889 as a branch of the Maffra railway line, closing in 1952. History Before line construction (1872-1889) In July 1872, a request was issued to the local shire president that a meeting be held on the prospect of a rail line to Briagolong, with a petition being organised by Michael Feely and Michael Landy of Stratford and Briagolong residents. Around 1877, the Railway League were making calls for a railway line from to , passing through , Stratford and Briagolong. December 1880 saw a public event held in Briagolong, headed by Landy, to hear the opinions of local residents, preceding a banquet to be held in Maffra. The railway commissioner, Thomas Bent, visited Briagolong on 22 October 1881, and according to the recollections of Marjorie Kelly, was "happy to grant Briagolong its railway". History The first post office in the town was at the railway station, and was called Tinamba Railway Station Post Office. It opened on 1 July 1887. The post office was renamed Tinamba Post Office around 1895. In 1931, there was a collision between a truck and a train at the railway crossing near the station. While there were no injuries, the truck was badly damaged. The passenger platform was shortened in length to 46 metres in 1973. Powerscourt Siding
Powerscourt is a closed railway siding located east of Maffra, on the Maffra railway line in Victoria, Australia. It was from Southern Cross station. The siding was used to load sugar beet. History In 1914, it was reported that Aboriginal bones were found while excavating at the siding, as well as stone axes and other similar materials. Boisdale Railway Station
Boisdale is a closed station located in the town of Boisdale, on the Briagolong railway line in Victoria, Australia. History The station opened concurrently with the Briagolong railway line in 1889, and was 224 km from Southern Cross. The main items freighted at the station were sugar beet and firewood. In 1902, a farmer named John Bennett fell off the platform at the station onto the rails, breaking two of his ribs. Bennett ultimately was compensated by the Railway Department with a "substantial settlement". Boisdale station was closed to passenger traffic in 1930. The station ultimately closed fully in 1952, after which the station building was demolished and the tracks removed. Maffra, Victoria
Maffra is a town in Victoria, Australia, east of Melbourne. It is in the Shire of Wellington local government area and it is the second most populous city of the Shire. It relies mainly on dairy farming and other agriculture, and is the site of one of Murray-Goulburn Cooperative's eight processing plants in Victoria. Maffra is a detour off the Princes Highway and is near Sale, Stratford, Newry, Tinamba, Heyfield and Rosedale. At the 2016 census, Maffra had a population of 4,316. History The town began as an outstation of the region's first cattle run, Boisdale, named by pioneer grazier Lachlan Macalister after a village on the island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
