Mae Naak (opera)
''Mae Naak'' is a 2003 opera composed by Thai composer Somtow Sucharitkul to an English libretto based on one of Thailand's best known ghost stories ''Mae Nak Phra Khanong''. The story is also the basis for Nonzee Nimibutr's popular film ''Nang Nak''. The opera's title role was created by Hong Kong born soprano Nancy Yuen who reprised the role in a 2005 production at the Thailand Cultural Center, Seoul born baritone Kyu Won Han as Maak, directed by Henry Akina, artistic director of the Hawaii Opera Theatre. Both productions were designed by prominent Thai avant-garde artist Sumet Jumsai. The opera's London premiere was on September 15, 2011, at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London. Nancy Yuen again reprised the role. Opera
Opera is a form of theatre in which music is a fundamental component and dramatic roles are taken by singers. Somtow Sucharitkul
S. P. Somtow (a rearrangement of his real name Somtow Papinian Sucharitkul; th, สมเถา สุจริตกุล; ; born 30 December 1952) is a Thai-American musical composer. He is also a science fiction, fantasy, and horror author writing in English. Somtow has both Thai and American citizenship. He served as a musical consultant on the acclaimed Todd Field film Tár. Youth A descendant of the Royal Chakri dynasty (his grandfather's sister was a cousin and consort of King Vajiravudh), Somtow was born in Bangkok. He moved to England with his parents in 1953 at the age of six months. English was his first language. Somtow was educated at Eton College and at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He returned to Thailand in the early-1960s for a five-year period, during which he became fluent in the Thai language. A libretto (Italian for "booklet") is the text used in, or intended for, an extended musical work such as an opera, operetta, masque, oratorio, cantata or Musical theatre, musical. Mae Nak Phra Khanong
Mae Nak Phra Khanong ( th, แม่นากพระโขนง, meaning 'Lady Nak of Phra Khanong'), or simply Mae Nak ( th, แม่นาก, 'Lady Nak') or Nang Nak ( th, นางนาก, 'Miss Nak'), is a well-known Thai ghost. According to local folklore the story is based on events that took place during the reign of King Rama IV. A shrine dedicated to Nak was constructed at Wat Mahabut. In 1997, the shrine was relocated to the nearby Suan Luang district of modern Bangkok. Common legend A beautiful young woman named Nak, who lived on the banks of the Phra Khanong canal, had an undying love for her husband, Mak. Nonzee Nimibutr
Nonzee Nimibutr ( th, นนทรีย์ นิมิบุตร, ; born in 1962 in Nonthaburi Province, Thailand) is a Thai film director, film producer and screenwriter. Best known for his ghost thriller, ''Nang Nak'', he is generally credited as the leader among a " New Wave" of Thai filmmakers that also includes Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, Wisit Sasanatieng and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Nang Nak
''Nang Nak'' ( th, นางนาก) is a 1999 Thai supernatural horror film based on the Thai legend of Mae Nak Phra Khanong. It was directed by Nonzee Nimibutr and released in 1999 by Buddy Film and Video Production Co. in Thailand. It depicts the life of a devoted ghost wife and her unsuspecting husband. Plot In a rural village west of Bangkok, Mak (Winai Kraibutr) is conscripted and sent to fight in the Siamese-Vietnamese War (1831–1834). Nancy Yuen Miu Fun (阮妙芬; born 1967) is a Singaporean singer. Career Yuen was born in Hong Kong. She is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, London. and has based her career in the United Kingdom and Singapore. She has made Cio-cio-san (''Madama Butterfly'') her role, winning acclaim. Kyu-Won Han is a Korean-American baritone who has had an active international opera career for the last two decades. Life and career Kyu-Won Han was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1972. After receiving his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, Han made his debut in 1999 as Masetto in ''Don Giovanni'' at the San Francisco Opera. Hawaii Opera Theatre
The Hawaii Opera Theatre (HOT) is the islands' only major opera company established in 1960. The company performs three or more operas in a season. Opera seasons start in October and end in the early summer of the following year. It performs mostly in the Blaisdell Concert Hall, Honolulu. HOT performs most of its mainstage productions at the Blaisdell Concert Hall and has also staged works at the historic Hawaii Theatre, warehouses, the Chinatown Artist Lofts, and other funky venues. Bloomsbury Theatre
The Bloomsbury Theatre is a theatre on Gordon Street, Bloomsbury, in the London Borough of Camden, owned by University College London. The Theatre has a seating capacity of 547 and offers a professional programme of innovative music, drama, comedy and dance all year round as well as providing a space for student-led productions. Funded by a UGC grant and a considerable private donation, the theatre was opened in 1968 as the Collegiate Theatre, and was renamed the Bloomsbury Theatre in 1982. Between 2001 and 2008, the theatre was known as The UCL Bloomsbury, to emphasise links with UCL, who use it for student productions 12 weeks a year.
